I had no problem staying stock on my MTS, the S10 will be stock also. I do like quiet!

I’m not buying it for it’s speed but as a good all around and versatile ride
I'm sure it'll have the "speed" aspect of it as well and all the other things you mentioned.

Speed it has. Many will find 200km/h sufficient I would imagine and the fact that it pulls strongly up to 180km/h. Comfort it has. Great suspension it has,etc., etc.

What is interesting in this thread is the subject matter and that is discuss the S10's engine solution, behaviour, to contrast the S10's engine with other bikes, especially the close competitors and to hear the insights that many have on bike engine technology.

I'd have to google 200 kph to figure out exactly how fast that is - I suspect it is plenty fast though! I'm mainly concerned with low rev drivability, in the sub 4000 rpm range. I can drive my DL1000 around all day and hardly ever go over that. I suppose if I'm really hauling ass I might twist it up to 5500 for a gear or two, but most riding through the twisties will have me back in the 4000 rpm range chugging through them. For me the main shortfall of the V-Strom is its relatively weak power in that area. It pulls there but I can only imagine the new bike with more displacement and a 13.5 mm longer stroke will really make riding it fun. I hope the fuel injection is as well sorted out as the Yamaha FZ1 I had. That thing was absolutely perfect.

That's too fast for me. Maybe a few years ago, when I was young, dumb, and full of, well you know. I've had too many low speed falls to know that I don't want to hit the ground at high speed.

man, what are all you young guys talking old and slow for - I am 60 this next month and I regularly commute at 180kmph and some times a tad faster on my 1600cc Harley. If it would go faster I would...

motor discussions are always fun, my experience with Yamaha sleds (snow machines) is that Yamaha engines are already producing a significant amount of hp per cc. I am sure if one was to get more air in, more fuel in and the exhaust out, boost the rev limiter.... you guys know the story. hey how about a blower or turbo, I am sure this thing would dyno around 150hp with a turbo. Just kidd'n

It seems like this engine will have plenty of power. I'm sure I'll be satisfied. I was kind of wondering if anyone else would notice the super-low compression ratio and decide to make a higher compression ratio set of pistons for it. It seems like this engine is just ripe for it!

180 kph is around 110 mph! My old 1990, 5 speed Ultra would only do about 110 mph on top end and just didn't like cruising at anything over 80 mph. Please post up some pics of your bike and let us know what you've done to it!

My personal criteria for a street motor on a 500-600 lb. bike is 100 hp and 75 lbs./ft. of good, linear torque. That's decent power, IMO. A bike with this power level will do about 125 mph (or better), turn the quarter in under 12 seconds and provide good top gear roll on power for leisurely passing. Anything more than that is fun, but not really required, nor particularly useful on the street.

My old, Busa would cover 135 mph in third gear and was GPS clocked at 202 mph, once. I could have squeezed a few more mph out of it, but I ran out of bridge. The bike was rock steady. Very few mods, too: Ivan's timing retard eliminator, full Yosh exhaust, 18/40 gearing and a Power Commander. That bike could spin the rear tire at 130 mph and flat out smoke it at 100. Tons of fun, but not a touring bike by any stretch and definitely not an adventure bike. I was around 55 years old at the time and loved it!

Jeesus!! My hairdresser also had a busa. 4 months in the hospital with his Mum at his side. His Mum was also a doctor...He isn't allowed no more Busa. Mummy has put her foot down....

Yeah, that engine configuration hasn't won much more than world and national superbike championships and that goofy crank config was chosen by some dude named Valentino back in 2003 who then won a title or two with it. I understand riders are the main factor in titles so I wouldn't say the x-plane crank makes champions, but it seems the design isn't exactly holding them back either.

As to underperforming, in the eternal quest for off road traction, snappy low end isn't always the most desirable trait. My old WR250F could find traction in just about any condition. My KTM 300, on the other hand, has LOTS more power but can spin up a little quicker than you want when it gets slippery.

Hey Jakeboy - my Harley is nothing special. Nothing on the lines of a Busa. 180kph is getting near the top speed. 1600cc engine, two into one python exhaust, ness big sucker intake and a twin tec twin tuner for fuel management. the ECU has been "stage one'd" which shifts the rev limiter up a few hundred RPM's. I commute on really layed back two lane black top with very little traffic or law enforcement.

You are probably right. It would be fun to see an after market turbo for this bike, but that kind of stuff is not for me. I'd smile when I saw it though.

I am there with you Rick - my SupaT will very likely remain stock. I just get a kick out of the urge to wring another two horses out of an infernal combustion engine. I can't imagine the work to custom build a turbo application for an adventure segment scooter

Looks good, Troll! That old Ultra of mine just pushed too much air. It was a great bike for hauling huge loads and got better than 40 mpg, most of the time. Not bad for a 1340 cc motor with a plain, old fashioned mixer!
