wire iPhone power to PDM60

I want to wire an iPhone power cord to my PDM60. I bought a USB/iphone cord and when I opened the wire it has three wires not just a hot and ground. I am not an electrician. Photos attached. One brown, one white, and a wrapped white one in the middle.

Which wire is the positive and which is the ground and what is the third wire for?

Since the PDM60 is 12v and the iPhone charges at 5v do I need to add something to drop the voltage between the PDM and the iPhone? If so what do I have to add?

Has anyone hard wired an iPhone power cord to a PDM60? Any suggestions?

Thank you.
Lloyd

you would be better served getting a 12vdc to USB plug and wiring it up. then you can hook the iPhone or whatever into the USB. Just have the power side come off a keyed circuit unless you want USB power all the time, but it can and will kill you battery.

I am currently using dc to iphone adapter in the dc accessory outlet, but I want to use the PDM60 and let it control the power switching. I am trying to wire it directly using an iphone power cord.

LloydW your best bet is to get a different cable that has the downstepper built in, there are tons of them out there.. they are simply Iphone cables with a small box that provides the correct volts and amps to your device, then on the other end is simply a red and black wire which you then put into the positive and negative ports of the electrical fuse block. Another option is to buy a SAE connector that has the generic adapter at the end and have one side with the wires to your fuse block, and the other with a USB adapter for the SAE connector, then you can use any wire you wish.

I planned on using tge SAE connectors for all connections.

I have not seen an iphone cable with down stepper. Any idea where to get one or what they are called. Will do a goigle search.

Thanks.

What WJ posted above will probably be your best bet. INNOV provides a similar unit for their camera system, only with a single outlet. Keep in mind that the iPhone cable carries both data and power, and uses a chipset at each connector, which is what allows the Lightning connector to be inserted in either orientation. Simply clipping into the cable with power is likely to damage your phone.
