Why aren't tank bags waterproof by default?

So I mosey by the local cycle dealer today just for a look, and spied a Cortech Super Mini tank bag on the rack. It's a nice piece, just what I'm looking for to hold a few small items and my route overview.

Displayed prominently on the package was a label that said, "Includes waterproof cover!" Let's stop and think about this for a sec. This is not a piece of gear that a living, breathing, sweating human has to wear. It is designed to hold electronic items and maps, etc. It doesn't need to breathe or expel moisture from the inside out. Shouldn't something like this be waterproof without having to put a cover on it? Spray some coating on/in it, put on a rubberized zipper and you're away to the races! I know cost is usually a factor but they've included a waterproof cover haven't they?

It just seemed idiot to me. So idiotic I created a new board just so I could rant about it.

Venture,

Check out the Enduristan Sandstorm Tank Bag at Black Dog Cycle Works. The tank bag is waterproof.

I have a couple of waterproof tank bags, but the sealing is quite elaborate - there is an inner liner with a drawstring and waterproof zippers. It makes the tank bag harder to us, heavier, and obviously increases the cost. So I think that is your answer why it isn't the "default". It's the same reason all jackets aren't waterproof by default.

Yeah, I know it always comes down to cost. It just seems like one of those items that you just don't want to leak on you...

I may just buy that Cortech mini and use Ziploc bags for the important stuff.

Venture, I've got a Cortech mini I'll give you a deal on. Used for one 3K mile trip last summer. Like new condition. Post up a link to the one you're looking at and I'll see if it's the one I have.

This is the one I was looking at:

However, after lots of thought I want to make sure I can fit my spare face shield in the tank bag that I buy. Do you know if a shield will fit in it?

I have had one for almost 5 years with no problems. I am not sure a shield will fit or if it does I do not think it would fit very well?
They do make jackets that have a zipper slot for a shield that goes in the jacket and around your side (lower rib area).

I tend to use a padded, tailored, pre shaped visor case. It's thin, can be used diagonally over the shoulder, put around your waist, straight on the tail or placed inside luggage. That said I hand mine from my Kriega rucksack. Now there's some good gear.

I have just about all of their gear ..... best I've ever used.

I wouldn't count on any cloth bag being waterproof. It may start out that way, but over time they will leak. As mentioned, the ziplock freezer bags are the way to go.
