Leaving South Carolina this Saturday and heading west. Hope to be near Denver on Monday. The plan is to spend 4-5 days in CO, a day or two in Utah, a day crossing Nevada, and the rest of our time (a few days) near Yosemite. Our final destination is San fran on 7/6.

So, any advice on a good place to spend the 4th near yosemite without sitting in traffic behind minivans and RV's? Any must see fireworks displays or concerts? Any secret quiet spots with a view? Open to all sorts of ideas.

We are a newlyweds and riding 2 up with camping gear.

What side of the Sierra will you be on? What is your route to San Francisco? Personally I would not go near Yosemite that weekend (7/4-8).

395:
- Whoa Nellie Deli (excellent food and gas) East end of 120)
- Mammoth Lakes (has camping and food)
- Devils Post Pile Nat'l Monument (scenic - hiking)
- June Lake (has camping and food)
- Benton Hot Springs (Inn at Benton Hot Springs)(has camping)
- Bodie SHP (scenic - rustic)(no camping no food)
- Mono Lake (has camping)
- Lee Vining (has camping and food)
- Lake Tahoe (can't say enough)
- Any of these passes have camping and are excellent riding. (Sonora Pass 108, Ebbitts Pass 4, Carson Pass 88, Monitor Pass 89)
- Markleeville (is a neat town)( has camping and food)
- Sorenson's (has camping and food)
- Hope Valley (has camping)
- US-50 will be busy and slow between South Lake Tahoe and Placerville.
- 120 will be busy around Yosemite and west.

Our route is quite open. Thank you for the suggestions. If we come into CA on 50, I'll be looking at some of those other passes south of Tahoe.

Any recommended camping areas around Tahoe that might have space around the 4th? Primitive is fine, too.

Dang, too bad on the timing. I'll be heading out Sunday morning for Whitehorse. Would have been neat to see you and your bride if you were anywhere near Loveland.

Ride safe!!

I thought you were arriving from the south on 395. So US-50 will bring you through Carson City with a very nice highway connecting to Lake Tahoe. If you were to ride all of the lake it would be 72 miles. If you can't do that I would suggest the west or California side. Mainly because of Emerald Bay, a must see. And if you have time I suggest you take the Vikingsholm (another mansion) tour http://www.vikingsholm.org/ . Erhman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point (lake side) is a good stop to view the lake from a pier and a visit to a mansion.

Here is a map of Lake Tahoe camping http://www.explorer1.com/tahoe/camping.htm . I no longer have suggestions other than call ahead of time. Lake Tahoe is VERY popular and there is so much to see.

Here is a map http://goo.gl/maps/18Zm with a suggested route. The downside is when riding CCW you are lane further away from the lake and have to cross traffic to get to the lake. Stop often and see what you can. Remember that 75% of the traffic is on vacation.

Get gas in Meyers before you come to the inspection station. A lot of gas stations and food.

The map takes you to Hwy 88 instead of US-50. US-50 can be cluttered with heavy traffic and not too many views. I avoided Placerville on US-50 because of the signals and HEAVY traffic. Hwy 88 is very scenic, good surface, a lot of elevations changes, a couple good scenic turnouts, many lakes, and other places to stop. Sorensens has food. Kirkwood Inn has food. Almost every lake has a resort off the highway. I routed you through Fiddletown and Plymouth (gas and food) to save distance. If time is not a problem you can go to Jackson (gas and food) and historic Hwy 49. Latrobe Road is a fun ride. "O" on the map is a sign showing Ocean City MD 3073 miles. This sign is the west end of US-50 and it is also the other direction so it would be out of your way. You can see it with Street View.

If you have time while passing through Sacramento give me a call (PM sent) and I will treat you to a meal.

Hope you enjoy Lake Tahoe and all of its beauty.

Last couple of days in Co have been great. I only wish they would bump all of the speed limits around here by about 10 mph. Cage drivers in this state could learn a lot from NC drivers. Here are a few pics and highlights. Headed to Utah tomorrow. Doing the slab thing and national parks. Hoping to cover some miles.

Be very careful in and near Delta, Utah. Nice town but... Speeding, not good. Follow the rules while riding in the town. We didn't have trouble but have heard many stories.

Made it to Moab for breakfast. Got 270 miles on the last tank with a little help from my camp stove fuel bottle....

Passing gas stations in Utah seems to be a bad idea.

Drove around Tahoe to the north. Thanks for the suggestion. Came across monitor pass in hail and rain. It was slick as glass. Drove into yosemite and back out to lee vining. Camping somewhere in Yosemite tomorrow and I think we are going to San Fran for the 4 th.
