What Went Wrong?

I found this video on You Tube of a "mishap" a rider had on the TAT. It's a pretty big get off and I certainly don't want to be in the same situation, so was he going to fast, or did he over compensate? The crash occurs at about 5:00 minutes.

End of my Western TAT trip (bad crash)

I watched it several times a couple months back just to see what the surface looked like. Rewind, look, rewind, blow up, rewind, HD... Looked to me like the ripple in the road just changed his direction of travel in a heart beat. Note the exclamation several feet after he left the road.
For a label; line choice.
Left was a boulder, or right of the ripple that flicked him off the mountain might have kept him on the mountain. No choice is still a choice. Makes me hurt watching it...

Just got back from Hanksville. Some tough ledges on the trail to Land of the Standing Rocks. I think he was going too slow, not too fast. A little bump on the loose rocks knocked his balance to the left, and over he went. More momentum helps to keep the bike going straight up the hill. Since there was no corners too make, better to gas it. Last year, on Lockhart Basin, I was on a loaner bike and just back into dirt riding, and I found that a straight line up the nastys and more throttle saved my but more than once.

Yeah, that's the "thrill" of trail riding or epic overland trips. Its all a great adventure till it goes wrong then you can be a long way from help with broken bones or severe bleeding. Not that it will or should deter you if that's your thing. I reckon this guy was super lucky if all he faced was a long walk out. I remember attending a talk by an intrepid round-the-world adventurer who proudly showed his helmet with a bullet hole where some bandits had shot at him. Missed his head by inches. You don't hear from the guy where the bullet didn't miss by inches. He doesn't give inspiring talks about his adventures. Me? I'll take my chances on the pavement or the race circuit. The risks are probably greater but help's never as far away.

What a shocking crash to watch. Made me gasp. I agree it does look like the ripple in the rocks was what threw him off. Not sure if a steering stabilizer would have helped in that situation (never used one), but it might have.

This one makes me a bit queasy. The trail didn't look all that rough and I could see myself doing it on a Tenere, and due to the big bike's suspension it would probably be at a similar slow speed. It's all about line selection, but I'll admit I don't always pick the perfect line. The spot that got him is exactly the kind of spot where I like to blip the throttle to lift the front over the ugliness. That technique doesn't work on the Tenere. This one makes me a bit queasy.

I do hope any injuries were minor and temporary. That's a scary one to watch.

You can read the entire story and see pics on ADVRider. It was on the tat. The bike was still rideable after that and got ridden out after the got it back on the trail. The rider went out on a stretcher after hitting the emergency button on his spot.

Think you have the wrong guy, Dallara was the one that kept his mouth shut on Mikes crash.

I believe your right, I was looking for the guy that comes to the defense of others being judged following their mistakes. Who was that masked man?

Here, I will get things started:
weight forward
whiskey throttle
sitting (or standing, couldn't tell which he was doing but it was all wrong)
looked where he went (this was totally clear that he was looking at the ground after going off the cliff. If he corrected this by looking towards the sky he might have pulled it off)

all humor aside, this is tough to watch.

I have worked several dozen fatal crashes in the past two years, some were very brutal with the deceased's body left at the scene, and I have a hard time watching this video.

Which he wouldn't have, if he had been riding alone, without the spot.
That to me is the nugget from this one.

Yep, and his spot was attached to the motorcycle, not on his person. This could have been a major problem if he was by himself and had been injured enough to where he could not move. Wear the spot on your body somewhere, don't attach it to the motorcycle that could end up out of reach.

::026: 1) He went where he was looking when the front wheel bounced

2) He was going a bit too slow to have enough momentum on his side

3) When turned towards the ledge, he gassed it!

I wonder if he was seated, and not standing?
