The Tenere is a huge bike to attempt learning dirt. Enormous learning curve.

Best way to learn is to temporarily buy a used small dual sport (XT 250 or WR 250) and learn on that. Once done you can likely sell it for what you paid, so not much financial commitment. It will dramatically improve your skills and be a more enjoyable dirt learning experience.

She is a big girl, keep her on groomed dirt roads for a bit. I'm always amazed at what I see these guys do off-road with a tenere. I have basic skills and feel like I barely survive... Lol!

Hey All,

First time on a fat dirtbike, any suggestions for youtube series, books, or dvds that have beginner friendly instructions?
My suggestion is DON'T. Learn on something a LOT smaller.

Personally, i think a XT250 is too big. Learn on something even smaller and lighter.

You are going to crash, a lot.

General consensus is to learn on a lighter, cheaper bike - but part of me questions if the things I learn on that bike will apply to the S10?

For example the suspension travel difference is huge, the tires are way different, etc

Everything applies.

The s10 is pretty darn capable offroad but the stakes are very high. Damage to the bike can be very expensive and/or catastrophic. It's heavy. So is a XT250. Obviously the XT is MUCH lighter.

All of the skills you develop on a lighter and smaller bike will translate. Further more, you will learn to appreciate the limits of whatever bike you are riding.

You'll also learn what you can recover from and when to bail. You don't want to end up under a S10. You don't want to bail from one, either.

Skills progression on a dirtbike looks something like this:

1. Crash a lot and have no idea why. Go home with a broken bike and a limp and hurt wrist.
2. Crash a lot. Go home with broken bike.
3. Crash a lot. Go home with scratches on your new stickers.
4. Low speed crashes, maybe even keep the bike running, maybe just have a few oh shit moments.
5. Think you have it all figured out and pick up the pace.
6. Crash so hard you go to the hospital.
7. Don't remember the last time you crashed.
8. Think you have it all figured out and pick up the pace.
9. Don't remember the last time you crashed.
10. Crash so hard you go to the hospital.
11. Buy a S10 and SLOW down.
12. Miss your dirtbike.
13. Don't remember the last time you crashed...

I agree I also agree that when not if you drop this pig it is a big deal and $$$$$ to replace the damage.
I was put in a situation a few weekends ago trailing around the Jamez mountains when around a blind corner this fool A-Hole in a Jeep 4x4 is coming straight at me around the turn with nothing to do but try to avoid him I did a fancy flick it twist it thing i did with knobby's not the dual sport tires i had on it.. Results kicked the rear tire from under me laying the bike down on hard granite smashing my already trashed knee from last years Tiger Vs Volvo episode bending my Happy trails side bag rack scraping the crap out of my side bag, tweaking my forks and handle bars to Caddywhompus position and leaving me in the dust saying WTF just happened?? :'(
All this was at less than 10 mph. I thought I dropped a Sherman tank the sound it made and slid about 10 feet..
I can say the Altrider crash bars did the job of saving my plastics..

Great stuff! Being new to adventure riding, I'll definitely take it easy and look for a smaller bike to train. Not being a stranger of becoming "detached" from my bikes, I know what it feeling like bring in the hospital and what it does to the pocket..... Hurts.
