I have seen vents like the one on the FD before, they would let water in if submerged. Has anyone found milky gear lube after submerging the FD in deep water crossings?
I'm wondering if I should carry a couple changes worth of gear lube when traveling.

put a longer breather tube on it if you're that worried

personally i'd just carry one quart with me. if you're doing long water passings where the FD's submerged then perhaps adding some extended riding on highway, you really don't want the lubrication capacity of the gear lube to get compromised.

Hmm, been up over my hubs I don't know how many times. Going to have to take a peak.

I've been way over the hubs many, many times and no milkiness when I've changed the rear drive oil. After the inital 600, I changed it at 11.5k Miles instead of the recommended 16K as I was concerned. YMMV

Interesting, I just asked about this over in the ADV thread. I rode through a water crossing Saturday that was well over the FD, actually over the front tire, so probably a good 20+ inches deep. It was about 30' wide, so I was in it for about 10 seconds. I just changed the FD fluid 1000 miles ago, so I may just pop open the fill cap to make sure everything looks normal.

I had mine submerged in a mud track up to the bottom part of the seat for about 10 minutes crossing it. Went to change FD oil when I got back exactly for the same concern. Nothing but FD oil came out. No milk. No water. Maybe they have a one way valve or something like on the gas masks ::003::
