Is the Tenere good at highway speeds? Is the engine smooth like a twin/four or is it more like a single in sound and vibration?
Define Highway speed, at up to 100mph yes, at a steady 120 on the autobahn probably not.

Is the suspension really soft like the DR650? Or is it truly pavement worthy. It seemed great when I sat on it. I am 6'3", 250. I'm really looking for a road bike that I can take off pavement occasionally.
Lots do, I tend not to as theres nothing near me, but people here do a lot more than the odd trail happily enough. Suspension is a bit soft at rear, but only really an issue two-up - and easily fixed in the grand scheme of things.

Any other advice?
Like all bikes it is a starting point and built to a price / to pass certain laws, IMO it is a very good one, I have modified forks and fitted quality shock, done the clutch switch mod, and I will get some gel in the seats and maybe later an ECU flash - all in all not a lot compared to new price to get it exactly how I want it.

Well thanks to RockyDS and others who pointed me to Bloodline's uncle in North Carolina.

I spoke to E.T. at the dealership this morning and got the YES warranty for $414 versus the $945 buck the dealer was trying to stick me with.

Nicest guy, very helpful and great service.

Thanks again!

I got the free side boxes, although the dealer tried a bunch of mumbo jumbo to get around it. I don't understand why because Yamaha reimburses them.

First tried to tell me they weren't on any more. Then tried to tell me the side bags came out of the deal so it upped the deal if I wanted them. Then told me they won't install them for free.

Unfortunately typical for Phoenix area sales at the RideNow dealerships. I stuck to my guns and they are ordering them for me to pick up. I'll put them on myself anyway rather than have their tech do a crappy job.

They free side bags are good through September as I understand.

Thanks for the info on the free boxes. The Yamaha boxes are far from great but hard to beat the price. I was looking on the Yamaha site and didn't see any mention of the promotion. Do you happen to have a link?

My understanding is the free cases are through Ridenow dealerships and not Yamaha.

What exactly makes you say that? Have you had any problems or issues with a set of the Yamaha side cases? Just what brands are "great"?

Just curious...

They are very small to start with, 62L combined compared to my old GS at 68L (not exactly generous) and my Trax which are a combined 82L - much more suitable for two-up touring. I also found them a bit fiddly and have heard complaints of them falling off / tops coming undone.

Probably OK for solo use and if included in a deal you can't go far wrong.

You're thoughts on the Yamaha cases are well documented, Rasher... :D

I was specifically asking PowersUSA, who made the statement I quoted above. I was interesting in hearing his reasoning.

Thanks!

I have seen the Yamaha lids fall apart, when i did my Alaska trip i ran into a guy from Connecticut that had his left side lid held on with a bungee cord. He was very disappointed in the Yamaha bags and was thinking of replacing them with Jesses.

Just my impression from reading reviews etc from the past 5 months. I don't have any first hand experience. I'm in the market for an S10 and if it came with the factory boxes at no extra cost I would be tickled pink. BTW, was that a dealer advertised incentive or a Yamaha factory incentive? Where did you learn about it?

My local RideNow dealer mentioned the offer was going on, after I had bought my S ten of course. I just added the Yamaha bags two weeks ago. The latching system is poor. Good concept, they just blew it in the quality department. I needed bags quick for an upcoming vacation/ride and couldn't swing what I really wanted.

I have no info at all on a free Yamaha side cases promo, whether factory, dealer, or otherwise.

I was just curious as how you had arrived at your conclusion the Yamaha cases were sub-par. Certainly while the Yamaha cases have some compromises (what cases don't?), there are an awful lot of high-mileage, both on- and off-road riders who have 'em and have not had any issues. For me, I could have had any of the various cases out there available... And I talked a lot with Jesse, Micatech, Caribou, and others. Once I weighed *ALL* the variables in my mind the Yamaha cases best fit the bill for my riding, and in 12 months and 22,000 miles of riding with them - on- and off-pavement, with many multi-day rides out on the road - I haven't had the first problem with them yet. I've even dropped the bike on the left-side *TWICE* and sustained no damage that wasn't repaired with some sandpaper, some "Back-to-Black", and a big crescent wrench to straighten the lower bracket. Neither of the drops kept me from getting home to make the repairs, and right now no one has ever been able to ascertain the bike was ever dropped.

Note that I installed them myself, and was very careful with the installation of the locks, etc. Careful, thoughtful installation and preparation goes a long, long way toward mitigating the various latch and lock complaints you hear from some folks. My locks and latches work great, and still do after tons of hard use.

Could they hold more? Sure. Could they have tougher locks and mounts? Maybe, but at what cost and at what detriment to quick mounting/dismounting? Could they be made of different material? Again, maybe, but at what cost and at what sacrifice to weight, ease of maintenance, sealing, etc.?

They look good, tuck in tight to the bike no wider than the handle bars, fit symmetrically, hold more than enough (along with one of my MotoFizz soft tail packs and a SW Motech/Bags Connection "City" tank bag) for me to tour for at least a couple of weeks at a time, have been durable and reliable for me for over 20,000 miles, use the ignition key, can dismount in seconds to go into a hotel room with you, make dandy camp stools and even a table when off the bike, seal so well I've never had a drop of water in one even in driving rain storms at high speeds, have great ground clearance cornering, are reasonably light yet plenty strong, have great handles to tie things down to if need be, stand flat on nice corner nubs when off the bike, the mounts almost visually disappear when the bags are off the bike, etc., etc. etc...

Understand once again, I am *NOT* saying the Yamaha cases are perhaps the very best out there... Just that they are a good, solid choice out there in the marketplace, and that far too many people discount them (and frag, flame, and otherwise disparage them) without ever really trying them. Sure, there are some horror stories out there about them, just like there are Jesses, Micatechs, Caribous, Touratechs, Givis, Traxes, Hepco & Beckers, HAPPY TRAILS, and any and all others.

Just my two centavos... YMMV, and certainly you pays your money and you takes your choice. ;)

Won't quote, but do agree with all of the above.

For me the Yamaha ones were too small, this was more of a put-off than press reports and I know a lot of people struggle cos they don't know how to operate them - when I first looked at a Super Ten at my local Yamaha dealer it took two of them quite some time to figure out how to put them on the bike (a demo 1st edition one of the sales guys used daily) and even longer to work out how to open and close them.

There was (probably still is) a video on a Yamaha site somewhere showing how to operate them.

I certainly do not trust Journo reports, neither do I consider my kit perfect and OEM stuff nearly always fits more flush and looks more integrated, and more often than not the toughest, best built high end kit tends to look like it was knocked up in a barn in quite a hurry by the A-Team.

I agree with everything Dallara said but I do have one thing to add on the oem cases. I popped my left case off on an offroad ride when I went down on the left side and hit a rock on the front lower corner. I suspect the hit was hard enough to force the mount on the case off the lower bracket and once the case was free it was able to rotate on the upper mount, breaking the plastic locking mechanism and leaving the panner on the ground a couple of feet back. As the plactic snapped half way along the case remounted okay and locked in place with the intact portion of the locking mechanism. Later when I looked inside the case I could see the plastic panel inside was also split, so the pannier was no longer waterproof. A third party case would have not popped off like that but that probably would have resulted in more damage to the case itself as opposed to the plastic parts I described.

Visibly there's only a scratch on the outside of the case but there's a fair amount of work to do to fix or replace the broken part although I could continue to use it just fine as is. I rode 900 kms home with it like that and I think it will be a winter project to repair it.

Agree with you Dallara, mine have been on for 2 + years, no issues, never leaked, sit in tight enough for hard riding. The lock mechanism had me stuffed when I first used it and I thought I would bend the key but when you work it out that one direction opens the lid, the other for on and off, away you go. I love the fact that when I want to take them off, I dont have a mass of ugly steel frames hanging off the side of my bike. Each to his own and I like the look of a lot of the panniers out there but the yamaha ones get a lot of knockers and I thought I would pass on my positive experience.
