Looking for advice on top box selection. I have OEM Yamaha Panniers. There is 16 inches between the lids. Do I have to have a top box that is less than 16" wide in order to open the panniers with the top box installed? or does the top box bolt on far enough back that its width is a non-issue?

I would get a top box that suits your needs. There is no need to open the panniers as you can put things you want to access in the top box. Heavy items in the panniers to keep the weight lower lighter stuff top box. If you really need to just remove the top box. I can get a helmet and my jacket in my topbox and its not that big.

That makes good sense... I had cornered myself into thinking I needed access to all three boxes all the time. Thanks!!

You can always put waterproof bags on top of the panniers aswell. If you have Yamaha panniers im not sure how high up they come. The Yamaha topbox is quite small ( pre Givi boxes and panniers )

I used a Givi top box with the OEM panniers and it quickly became a PITA having to move the top box back or off every time I wanted to open the panniers. The square top boxes like the OEM one, are fine. I don’t use the panniers anymore, I just strap a bag to the rear seat, which I know isn’t possible for everyone.

I have a Givi Trekker Outback 42L, it works fine with the OEM panniers, the lids clear it by ~1/2” on each side.

I have a top box very similar to the one Sierra showed.
The mounting is the worst part about it even though the box itself is great.
Having to take it off every time to get into the panniers is annoying so you learn to pack such that only the things you’ll immediately use during the day go into the top box.

Is there some reason for not installing a OEM Yamaha top box ? If you put a add in the wanted to buy section you could find a used Yamaha top box for a reasonable price pretty quick.
i have been using the Yamaha top box and Panniers trouble free for the past 130,000 miles, the only trouble I ever had was one of the locks fell out because the dealer that installed them didn’t follow instructions to use blue lock tight on the tiny screws that hold the locks in place, after that lock fell out I removed all the locks and applied blue lock Tite to the screws and never had any more trouble.

Be careful putting waterproof bags on top of Aluminum panniers. Why??? Well, I did on a long trip and when I went over some rough bumps anmt speed the weight went up... and the weight came down... and pushed down on one of the panniers so much it bent/bowed it on the side which attaches to the bike. Only put light loads on top of the panniers. I would not buy a top box thst would interfere with my operating the side panniers. There are times I can get into all of them in a day. (Maybe I misunderstood what was said?) I don't have stock luggage but why not put a Yamaha top box on. I have a Moose Racing top box and like it.
