Throttle cables - what the Frick!

Hi all! Hope everyone has had a great holiday season. I'm in the process of buttoning up following a valve adjustment and for the life of me can't figure out how to get enough slack out in the throttle cables for proper operation. No risers in place. Any guidance out there for me? I've been wrenching on bikes for years and don't have a clue why these are giving me such a hard time.

What was the last thing that you did to the bike before the problem started? ::021::

Did you double check the routing? Misrouted the cables last time I did valves on a bike.

I triple checked them. I think I'm confused by the adjusters at the throttle body end having only one nut on each cable. How do those work?

I just did mine, easy peesy. Make sure cables are routed properly, the cable that pulls into the sheath when you twist the throttle is the cable that should be on the bottom. The cable that pulls in when throttle closes goes on top.

Next, loosen nuts on both cables, the nut should be about to fall off the threads.

Route the bottom cable first by placing the head of the wire into the slot on the throttle cam. DO NOT PLACE THE THREADED END INTO THE THROTTLE BODY SLOT. You first need to route the cable into the cam, then you place the threaded piece into the throttle body holder/slot. Now you twist the threaded rod into the nut. The nut is held in place by the 2 teeth.

Once its snug move on to the top cable and do the same thing.

Yes I have one. Just completed the valve adjustment. These cables are killing me. If you have tips great. If not I don't need your comments.

You're not the first and won't be the last. Don't have access to my service manual right now, but there is a routing illustration. When you get them right suddenly it's like whatever was the problem?

There's no adjustment at the bell crank, you just tighten down then threaded collar to the captured nut. As stated above, route the cables into the bell crank before you slip the threaded collar and nut back into the bracket. The manual doesn't mention this but it's much, much easier to do this before the throttle bodies are seated into place.

Don't know if I'm reading this correctly, but you have too much play in the cables and it just got like this after the valve adjustment? What about the slack adjuster on the cable itself? Has that come loose by chance?

Hmmm, I thought using the manual might be a really swell tip. Guess not. ::007::

When I did mine, I simply loosened each cable enough to be able to disconnect from the throttle bodies, which as mentioned is easy once the throttle body is loosened and pulled up to gain access. From there the cables just sit there, then after valve work install the cables before mountimg the throttle bodies. What can go wrong?
