::022:: I really wanted the new beemer [ both GS & R tourer] to be good bikes, purely because I don't like to see anyone getting stiffed and sometimes the GS bashing gets silly. But logging onto Adventurerider forum last week, idly checked out the GS section and then a thread on problems with the w/c GS - to my amazement it ran to over 140 pages!
Let's be fair. First, you must have your browser set to not put very many posts on each page....with my settings, it runs to about 55 pages. And 95% of the posts are random comments rather than serious discussions of issues. I've followed this thread since inception, and there are perhaps ten or fifteen unique problems resulting in all the comments and some of them are pretty bogus. (That's not to say the bike has been trouble-free by any means.)

And by comparison, there are three or four "hard start" threads on this forum with well over 800 posts just discussing this one single problem. By itself, that makes it sound like this problem is catastrophic. Post counts don't tell you much of anything and page counts even less.

::014:: Duly noted - as I say no axe to grind, just slightly taken aback

My BMW was a bit crap, despite not having one of the bigger "common" faults (Final Drive / Dropped Valve / ABS Control unit) it still had a myriad of smaller issues well before 20k and I just felt I could not trust it - plus forking out about 50% more for servicing AND feeling I had no option but to pay another £350 (About $600) each year to extend the warranty in case of a big ticket failure.

The LC GS also had more recalls in the UK before the first container landed than the S19 has in four years.... and it seems issues and recalls are still coming in, BMW have replaced at least one complete bike and a number of engine / gearbox units under warranty for customers, and there are several reports of bikes being stuck in dealers for weeks because they cannot solve the problems....

Of course this is still a small percentage, however it must be a much bigger percentage than Honda / Yamaha / Suzuki / Kawasaki, I know the BMW fanatics will say it is because they sell so many more, however...

Firstly the BMW had several recalls before a single owner had taken delivery

Secondly by the time the first reports of gearbox and clutch issues appeared there was only a handful of LC GS owners, and the S10 had been available in the UK for almost 3 years with no problems (maybe 1 or 2 headlight harnesses)

Thirdly, even now the S10 has had 3+ years of sales compared to six months of BMW sales, despite the sales phenomenon the GS is, there is probably a similar amount of S10's as there are new GS' out there - and the S10's will have covered a lot more miles as some are now almost 4 years old, many here have topped 50k now, and at least one has reached 100k....

Fourthly, as the LC GS is so new most will be low mileage, and already there is a fair few common faults - all far more severe than an easily replaced headlight harness or fuel tank O-Ring (which I believe only affected a small number of machines).

Now I am not all about bashing the BMW, and I loved my GS, if anyone asks me I always tell them BMW build some really nice motorcycles, but they are not as reliable as many people assume, I had no idea of all the problems until I bought a GS and found GS OWNERS telling tales of failed FD's / FPC's / ABS / Shaft / Gearbox / Clutch / Dropped Valves etc etc etc - an d not one or two, but some of these faults were reported in their hundreds.

I thought I was buying a relatively low tech machine which would last forever with some TLC, of course it had a load of issues and for me the BMW bubble burst really quickly, I got out and will not be going back.

I will always offer an honest opinion, and I really did prefer the last of the Aircooled GS models to the S10, and I am sure the latest WC is fantastic to ride - but test ride and ownership experiences are very different - otherwise I would have bought the Stelvio.

The Yamaha is far from perfect and some things I think Yamaha really got wrong such as the spokes and restrictions in first 3 gears - but these are simply enough to deal with for me, what is obvious from poking around here is these bikes do not f**k up badly, I can just ride, and ride, and ride without worrying about what is going to fall off / blow up / seize solid / piss slippy stuff on my rear tyre.

As for the dealers, I think the UK ones are OK, they all come across a bit smarmy, but generally seem to provide pretty decent aftersales support, it is just I would rather have a bike that does not go wrong in the first place than one that the dealer is very good at fixing for free.....

.... especially if you want to keep it past the two year warranty period, once that BMW warranty is up the thought of a major failure (along with the likelihood of one) scares the hell out of my credit card.

Another Recall for the 2013 BMW R1200GS
Asphalt and Rubber Blog site 5/24/2014 @ 6:54 PM, BY BRYAN DELOHERY

After an a recall early in 2013, involving high oil pressure levels in the transmissions of certain 2013 BMW R1200GS models, BMW was forced to install an oil restrictor to reduce oil pressure at the transmission output.
At the time, BMW was concerned about the high oil pressures in the transmission causing the rear sealing ring to come unseated and leak oil onto the rear tire.
After plugging that leak before any of the bikes managed to reach dealers, and despite installing the oil restrictor, the issue has resurfaced, this time leading to a non-serious accident in Italy, in March of this year.
After engineering analyses were completed last month, BMW determined that the oil restrictor was not sufficient enough to keep oil pressure levels in the transmission from pushing the sealing ring out of place and keeping oil off the rear tire.
As such, dealers will be installing a bracket to prevent the seal from being pushed out of place, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in June 2014.

This is a Michelin vid but uses the GS......

With all the mentions of steering control, on this thread, it's worth watching.

Also the comments at the end are entertaining...

MICHELIN ANAKEE III: Better Stability For Better …: http://youtu.be/eDvV7_OJ3O4

Seems to imply that, Anakee3s are so good, they will even stabilize a GS.

I had a BMW F650 GS Dakar that was a GREAT bike, at least until I took it to a dealer for it's second 12k service. The dealer, 110 miles away, had me bring the bike in on trailer so the valves would be cold. I was to pick it up the following day. Well, I had an incident come up, so I called 'em and told 'em I'd be one day later. They said fine. I went to pick it up and it was not ready to go. After waiting another 3 hours, the cost for the service was TWICE what I'd been told. I wasn't happy, but loaded it up and brought it home. I took it off the trailer to ride it up the hill into my garage. Put it on the sidestand and went into the house. When I came out later there was a HUGE pool of oil under the bike. The oil tank was grossly overfilled! I siphoned a full Quart of oil out and it was still at the "full" mark! Then I decided I'd better check things over. I noted the rear wheel didn't look right and found the adjusters on the chain drive were off by 4 full marks from one side to the other. Also, the axle NUT was finger tight!!! I also found a total of 4 of the fairing mounting screws were missing....I called the dealership and followed up with a detailed letter to the GM. They finally sent me a whopping $50 gift card good at their dealership as as "good will" measure! (I guess the tech was too busy working on the HD's the dealership also sells to actually service my little thumper. Long story short, that single experience soured me on BMW forever. I rode the following week to a Triumph dealer and bought a 1050 Tiger that I'm still riding. I'll not be drinking any more of the BMW koolaid. My bike WAS a decent motorcycle, but the service was, without question, the absolute WORSE I have ever experienced since I started riding in '67. ::009::

oldbear, do not ever take your Triumph to Triumph of Salt Lake, in Utah.

I won't re-live the details of their service for me but you've been warned.
