Why did they build the Tenere without self canceling turn signals ? Mine is a 2013, does 2014 and later Tenere have self canceling turn signals ?

All the late 70's and 80's XJ and XS models had self cancelling turn signals.

They were 'smart' too, taking distance traveled (using a magnet and reed switch in the speedo) into account. It is amazing that such an obvious safety aid is not mandatory on modern bikes.

Leaving a turn signal on must have caused many t-bone accidents over the years.

This is one of those things that simply goes back and forth over the years depending on who is in charge of making the decision. You either love or hate self canceling turn signals.

Personally, I feel you should be paying attention when you're riding and it's an ingrained habit to turn the turn signal off. AND, I'll turn it off when I WANT if off, not when some pre-determined signal shuts it down, which may, or may not be a good time.

My wife's bike has self canceling signals, (BMW GS). Yes, I occasionally forget to turn the signal off on my Super Ten. It's rare, but it happens. OTOH, my wife is constantly creating hazards every ride because she turns, and then the signal is still on as she is approaching another intersection with oncoming traffic thinking she is going to turn, then she doesn't. It's caused people to turn in front of her on several occasions, which is perhaps the worst possible hazard to a motorcycle.

Self canceling turn signals have no place on motorcycles, IMHO. Some are done better than others, but no algorithm can accurately predict real world motorcycle use. Even if you have this feature on another bike, you shouldn't be lazy and rely upon it, you should still be canceling your signals manually when you are done with the turn. Then at least, should you forget, it will eventually do it for you and you won't be riding miles down the road looking like a dumbass, but the responsibility is still on the rider to shut the signal off.

Sadly, most riders with bikes that have this "feature" are lazy and just rely on it to shut off the signal instead of doing it themselves when the turn is complete.

On some bikes like our Super Tenere's, at least the Gen 2 models have large, bright and high placed indicators for the turn signals that make it pretty hard to miss that they're on. I've owned other bikes, my ST1300 being an example, where the dash indicators are quite small, dim and sometimes obscured by the instrument binnacle. Worse, in direct sun you can't see them at all. Often I use my hand to shadow the indicators to see if they're on or off. Much easier to forget a turn indicator like the ST1300's and I think self canceling ones would be a great idea. On the Honda ST liSTs you can find all manner of farkles to make them more visible.

My old XS750E Yamaha had them and they worked great.

This is very good, I have it fitted to my TMax audicator.com.

The buzzer comes on after a number of flashes and gets louder and louder as time passes

Seems like a decent idea, for the past 500,000 miles all my bikes had self canceling turn signals so not having them on the Tenere is kind of annoying, I usually remember to turn them off but every once in a while I simply forget just like I see happening to other folks way to often.

I totally agree with you. None of the Police Motorcycles that I rode over the years had self canceling signals and I have just learned to turn them off and pay close attention to it also.

Mk I Thumb works well for me and hasn't let me down (much) in 30 odd years of riding.

Relying on something else is never a good idea when riding.

I might be interested but have no idea what it costs or how complicated it is to instal , have any other Tenere riders actually tried this thing ? Price website says the price is 99e I'm thinking that might be a lot more than 99 cents LOL .
99 Euro = ~$109 US depending on the exchange rate.
