Struggling with 8" tablet mount

Hi there,

I got an 8" tablet that I want to mount on my S10...now the brackets are a separate issue on their own...the first challenge is to get the right mount attached to the bike....and where to attach as well...

The tablet is rugged and weights 540g...if you add to the the bracket (may be 150g?) It becomes a heavy set up attached mainly to the Stay 1 brackets which is an easy to break peace of plastic (had mine broken recently without a fall....just because of high vibration due to heavy offroad track of 140km)

Mounting it on the handlebar is not really something I prefer....I wish I could find and build a mount that attaches directly to the frame of the bike (not the plastic peaces....)...if I hate anything abou the S10 the absence of metallic strong mount attached to the bike frame will be #1...

Appreciate if anyone was able to install a heavy tablet and used the set up on offroad...

Cheers

I've found that if you put stabilizers on the windshield mount, the accessory rail above the dash becomes a pretty stable mounting platform. My Zumo is mounted there, and while it's not as substantial as a tablet, it's still portly. It vibrates a little, but that's due to RAM mount.

The stabilizers were made by a member on here, though I can't recall the member's name at the moment. Here's what they look like on the bike:

Before I installed them, the accessory rail was virtually useless. Once I put them on, I was able to mount both a GPS and a phone to the rail.

Thanks. Any idea about the approximate weight of both your phone and your zumo with their mounts?
Did you test this set up on offroad?

According to the internet, a Zumo XT weighs 9.2 ounces (262 grams). The Motorola Z3 I used to use weighed 5.6 ounces (about 158 grams). I've never been off road on the S10, if off road is defined as "going someplace where there isn't any road at all". I've been on gravel and dirt roads plenty of times, some that were pretty bad like Tub Run Road on the MABDR. I won't say that the device doesn't vibrate at all when it's mounted to the rail; after all, even though the accessory rail is pretty solid with the stabilizers attached, the bike itself is still bouncing around.

I think having a broad base for a mount attached to the rail can help with vibration. I built my own rail mount for the Zumo that I feel cuts down on some of the shaking that can be encountered using a single point mount. It looks like this:

It's a piece of aluminum plate and two u-bolts. I think that the closer you can get the tablet to the rail, the less high frequency vibration you'll have. Sometimes the RAM style mounts can be a little bouncy because the device ends up sitting at the end of what amounts to a long lever that's pretty far from its base. You might be able to find something from a company like Touratech that will mount the tablet directly to the rail, without any armature in between the rail and the device.

Not too much worried about the mount or the little vibration...but more about the foundation of the support....I thought about investing in a rally tour like this one but still hesitant given the cost...

Yeah, some of those mounts actually cost more than the device that's mounted to them. The prices in a Touratech catalog will make my eyes bleed. Seeing their price (it was something like 40 bucks) for an outlet bracket caused me to make my own out of a scrap piece of angle aluminum:

As far as the strength of the accessory rail with the stabilizers, I'm very confident in it. The stabilizers do attach to plastic parts of the body work, that's true, but they've been on my bike for years, and there's no evidence that the plastic is compromised. If I didn't trust the strength of the accessory rail, I definitely wouldn't hang my Zumo on it.

Will try to get hold of one set though the seller seems to be based in Canada...

Have you ever considered this as a last resort? I don't like attaching stuff on the handlebar but though about this out of despear Screenshot_20230802_215349_AliExpress.jpg

I think a rig like that might put the tablet right where it would obscure being able to see the instrument pod.

How handy are you? I have the pattern for that windshield brace that shows all the dimensions. You could cut one out of aluminum with sabre saw, or even a coping saw. I use both of those a lot when I work with aluminum.

Oh if you have the pattern then I can go directly to the Aluminium Smith and get it cut! Thanks a zillion!

Found this ready for use version....I will give it a try because it already has the support that attaches to the sides...it says fir 2014 and up but I am sure it should work for the 2012 because the side holes and the windshield support is the same Screenshot_20230803_131926_AliExpress.jpg
