Stock Power Outlet on the 2012 ST

I just purchased the 2012 ST in like new condition with only 1,600 miles on the bike and was trying to figure out (did not get an owners manual) how the stock power outlet by the instrument cluster works. I plugged in a US 12 volt adapter to USB converter and did not get any juice with the ignition in the on position (but bike not running) and with the bike in the off position. Does the bike need to be running for the outlet to work?

Also, where might forum members be wiring in auxiliary lights, the power line? I don't want to wire to headlights, as I want the lights on when I want them on.

Thanks, Jeff

Welcome to the forum. The stock 12v outlet is only fused for 3 amps. I would not be surprised if the fuse is blown. People try battery tenders or air pumps and blow the fuse. You can download an owners manual here: https://www.yamahamotorsports.com/motorsports/owners-manuals That is a genuine Yamaha, approved site. You can't get service manuals that way, but you could download the owner's manual and it will answer lots of questions.

Many people wire aux lights thru a fuse block of some kind. Eastern Beaver PC-8 is one, http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Bike_Specific/Yamaha/yamaha.html
Fuzeblocks is another, http://www.fuzeblocks.com/ (I have one for sale if you are interested), as well as several other options. The Easter Beaver has very nice kits for different number of circuits that can plug into the OEM power wires for Aux lights and heated gear, but allow you to wire it as you wish, not tied to the headlights. There is a spot under the upper right panel that the PC-8 fits well in, with only minor removal of a plastic rib. (I have a '12 also and that's where I mounted mine).

Hope that helps.

I also have a 2012 model, and my outlet turns on with the ignition, the bike doesn't need to be running. I use this outlet to charge my phone.

There are several threads here about adding a power distribution system, searches on Eastern Beaver, PC8 and fuse block should return most of them.

Thanks for the input. So you wire the Eastern Beaver directly into battery and then run your accessories into the Eastern Beaver?

Thanks, Jeff

Your 2012 model has two cables tucked behind the other stuff in front of the battery and near the tool roll location. They have triangular white plugs that are capped with blank plugs. These are the aux light and heated grip power sources for oem options. The PC-8 kit uses one of these to power it if you got the Yamaha Super Tenere specific kit. You use the existing blank plugs and put pins in them, crimping on to the PC-8's wires, (if I remember correctly).

Eric,

So you have to insert pins into the stock accessory adapter? Do they come with the kit? Are they difficult to install?

Thanks, Jeff

In the early kits you did, but if you look at the link in my earlier post or the one Ramseybella just posted, (same link), it shows the white connector that just plugs into the oem aux lights connector that is capped with a blank plug. You will find it tucked behind other wiring on the right side, ahead of the battery. The other, similar plug is the oem heated grips plug. There are simple ring connectors for the pos and neg batter connections and the white plug to the oem aux lights connector with the relay already wired in. The three ring terminals all go to the PC-8. It's as simple as it gets. You just need to find a spot to put it, which most of us put under the upper right side panel, as I mentioned before.
