OK I haven seen all the folks buying one or two spokes, my question is: how often are you checking yours? what is the easiest way?


that darn brake rotor is in the way for me, what am I missing? I got 3 loose on my rear now and I am doing them with this tire change, 9100 miles 3 new rear wheel.

A allen socket with an extension or a long allen socket (6"), works very well. I torque mine to the spec and checked them every oil change when the bike was newer. I haven't had one ping flat in a long time now. I still check them every couple of oil changes though. lightly tap with a screwdriver handle. If it 'pings' you're good. If it's a flat sound, it's loose. I also put wire ties LOOSELY around every spoke crossing so that if a nipple should come off, the spoke won't flap and be broken or damage the wheel. Do not put the wire tires on tight or even snug, they can stress the spoke at that point as the wheel flexes and cause broken spokes.

Controversial subject. My opinion is no. Thread locker may keep a already loose spoke from unwinding further, but properly tensioned spokes don't loosen spontaneously due to a lack of thread locker. And since spokes may need to be periodically tightened now and then during maintenance, thread locker just makes this job harder. Both on bicycles and motorcycles, I've never seen a recommendation to routinely use thread locker on spoke nipples.

Many of use tie the spoke intersections together with plastic tie-wraps - this generally should keep a loose spoke from doing further damage.

If you do use it, I'd use the mildest stuff designed to seep into the threads.

All of my rear spokes have thread locker on them. I was surprised to see it.

All the rear spokes were replaced under warranty when the P.O. had it so I am assuming the dealer did it that way after an issue.

Unless they were complete and utter morons, no dealer would ever use threadlocker on spokes ???
