Lately the loading of the Home page is taking a long time (5-15 seconds). Responsiveness of the site seems to vary a lot, and appears to become worse.

Is it just me experiencing this? I'm in The Netherlands, so it might be due to bandwith issues overseas..?

I'm having the same problem. The other sites load as quickly as before, so it must be here.
Started a few days ago, about the same time the animated banner started. lol

Same here. This site has always been the slowest loading of the sites I visit but it does appear to have worsened recently.

This is a PERFECT lead-in to an announcement I was going to make this week.

We are moving to a new hosting provider. I've just about got all my ducks in a row, and I think Saturday evening I'll start the move. Unfortunately we are still on a shared hosting provider, so even though most of the time the performance is good, the server does have highs and lows due to the other web sites on it.

The home page though is a very heavy page. At best the performance is about 4-5 seconds, which is long, but it is doing so much in terms of data generation that's the price you pay. I've been meaning to take a look at what the home page is doing and see if I can tune it, but I want to wait until we are on the new host.

Sit tight, this is on my radar.

Thanks for the update Chris! I assume this is the change you mentioned a couple weeks ago via PM.

Sounds like a good move!!!

Ha! I thought it was due to the whole Internet logging on to see GrahamD's video of his speedy riding skills ::025::

I think it has a lot to do with the colour of the bike you have.

Mine is white, that's the colour of light! ::019::

Thanks Venture! ::008:: That's the curse of modern times.... I still remember the days when I used a 1200 baud modem... man, that was like magic! Just listening to the beeps would tell me what was happening.

Those were the days my friend.... I'm getting old and eventually will forget all of this.... time will fly bye then! :'(

I don't consider myself an "old guy," but I at least was old enough to be "plugged in" during the heyday of BBSes (probably 1990-1995). I have VERY fond memories of those days and the fact that I never got a chance to run one myself is a big part of what motivated me to start this community. One more thing off the bucket list. :)

I can roughly hum the carrier sounds for a 1200 and 2400 baud modem, sweet, sweet sounds that were like magic at the time.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane go check out BBSDocumentary.com. Absolutely riveting documentary for those of us who remember that era.

You're trying to serve up to much info on the home page, no reason to have so many discussions show up there in my opinion.. just the 10-15 most current topics and that's it. Each of those is a query and takes time to load. Most folks are probably going to use the replies since last visit or replies to their posts.

Just my opinion, lots being done on that page and probably not many reading it all.. I think.

Cut it down a lot and see how that works.

This is what I do, but I know some like to have all the "eye candy" on the home page to wet their appetite.

I cut it down yesterday (on a separate server) and it the topic boxes on the page do seem to be adding to the time the page needs to render. I had this concern when I started putting multiple recent topic boxes on the home page, but when I originally did it the performance didn't seem to be affected. I'm not sure yet what has changed, but that is the area I need to focus on.

The way that people consume new posts and topics on here is varied and a lot of it depends on personal choice. The unread topics link is good if tune in often, the front page is a better layout if you've been away for a bit and just want a glance at what is new in the categories you care most about. I'm all for flexibility if performance is good. I'm looking at the options and will come out with a reasonable response time one way or another.
