Plan is to have a SAE type through hole / panel port wired through one of the non switched fuses on my CenTech AP-2.

Purpose to allow battery access for using a tire air pump and to hook up a battery trickle charger.

Q: Anyone have suggestions are to where to mount it and what brand and model they like?

Thanks

I just have the battery tender lead tucked in behind the panel. I can grab it when I need it, and didn't have to drill out any plastics. A hard wired option would be cool, though. I'd put it in a dash infill panel.

I mounted a BMW-style Powerlet socket (http://www.powerlet.com/product/powerlet-socket-kit/425) in my HDB top clamp (http://www.highwaydirtbikes.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=catshow&ref=top_clamps_00), and have an SAE-to-BMW pigtail (http://www.powerlet.com/product/powerlet-straight-plug-to-sae-battery-charging-cable/644) on my charger cord, and my pump (http://motopumps.com/) has a BMW plug on it. Perhaps overkill, but it works great. The location makes it easy to plug in the charger, and to run the air pump from either side of the bike (depending on which side has the smallest puddle). The BMW socket has a spring-open cover on it, so I haven't had any issues with mud or dirt.

Probably overkill (a pigtail under the side of the seat would work too), but I have a number of other switches and lights on the HDB top clamp and there was this one spot just begging to be filled with something.

Good luck!

Like Davesax36 I connected the SAE wire directly to the battery and have the connector tucked behind the lower left panel. I also add a colored zip-tie to the SAE connector so I can easily identify it. Simple is as Simple does.

I hard wired (fused) an SAE plug directly to the battery and zip tied to the frame on the right side. Mostly for the charger and air pump, but sometimes I'll hook the GPS up direct so it stays on during rest breaks and gas stops. $4.00

I have a coaxial coming up between the seat and tank for heated clothes, with another up the back for hers. Those can be coiled into the tray beneath the seat.

Velcroed inside the right fairing, aft of the voltage rectifier is one of these Battery Tender USB converters, which I plug into to run my phone/GPS. Simply unplug the USB converter and the SAE connection is usable for the compressor kept on the bike or for charging the battery.

I wouldn't drill any holes in that side cover, it think it's important to keep the electrics relatively weather-proof. Additionally, for a panel that's removed occasionally, there's the hassle of disconnecting whatever outlet you may have mounted there.

As others have described, I have an SAE outlet tucked behind the right side panel just below my knee completely out of site. It's quite easy to retrieve it there. I have a Neutrino Black Box power distribution center which provides a set of terminals that pass straight through to the battery. That's where I connected my SAE lead (with a fuse of course).

Have mine out the left side zip tied but available. 20 amp fuse for compressor and plenty for heated gloves when it is 10-40 F.

I have a BMW port opposite of the Cig liter in the same orientation for battery charging and various other needs. I agree, don't drill the right side panel since it comes off more often, but I did mount my Heat-Trollers for grips and jacket on the left side, with a panel mount co-ax plug for the heated jacket below that. You could do the same thing for the panel mount SAE port.

This pic is from my 2012 and I did the same with my 2014. Coax outlet in an existing hole. 12 volts for my Tourmaster Synergy heated jacket liner controller, air pump and battery trickle charger.I have a coax to SAE adapter to plug in for my charger or pump. The heated liner controller takes coax.

Thanks for the inputs. Not sure what way I will go yet. On most of my previous bikes I followed what most of you suggested by having the battery tender connected directly to the battery. I used velcro to hold it down and out of the way. Worked great for years. I would never place a through port power connection through the battery cover cowling for the same reasons you all mentioned.

Once I decide which way to go will post a photo for just FYI.

I put my heated gear port in the right side cover. This area is open to the outside and waterproofing the opening isn't needed.

I just put my fused SAE connector under the seat. Easy to pop the seat to plug in my charger, heated gear and air compressor.
