Noob here to S 10. :)

Already have med. & small dent(s) both side of rear rim w/ loose spoke / tension screw came off. ::)

I'm gona USE this bike. It's got the capabilities w/ it's good suspension. >:D

What's the scoop on rim upgrades? 8)

I read the threads and they seem to talk more about maintenance / checking spoke tension.

I bought a demo and the shop didn't do any maintenance on the wheel I'm sure. The med. size dent came from the demo, not me.

Looks like I'll be upgrading.

Rear rim has a few dents on lip and has a wobble now.

This is from pretty tame trail riding. ARE THESE STOCK RIMS REALLY THAT SOFT / BAD ??

I know it makes sense to do both front and rear AND
WHAT IS THE WISDOM OF JUST DOING REAR RIM / SPOKE UPGRADE ??? Seems like fronts don't take as much punishment.

I've beat my rims to hell and back bash with speeds into rocks of all sizes. I think you've got firm tires and you actually have your spokes tightened up your rim should be fine. I've done what I would think would be considered at the very least to be "untame trail riding" and my wheels are still fine.

I can vouch for Tallgears taking some trails that were rim bashing rock tracks. And, he is "Tallgears" cuz he ain't a small load. (no offense friend)
His bike is well cared for. He was running a K60 up front and a TKC80 on the back. We discussed "airing down" while we were off-road. But last I checked, we both stayed at/near pavement pressures.

I'm not saying I'm some Sampson that can throw this beast around like James Stewart, but I was happy to see the rims held up. They are bendable, for sure. (See Pluric. The rim bustingest dude I know of) But if maintained, and short of a bad luck bash, they are ok by me. (probably hit a curb tomorrow for defending them)

With a warped rear rim my only options are to send for straightening or replace correct?

Can a slight warp be brought back true with spoke tension alone?

Is replacing rear only reasonable? seems like the fronts hold up better.

Thanks!

Trying to put myself in your shoes. The bike CAME with the damage. I don't know the cause or the severity. So I would probably get the expert to check it out. Woody can tell you exactly what you got. I suspect he can just repair it if it's as you describe. You'll get it back better than new from Yamaha. Personally trued up by THE guru, AND with superior spokes.

Good luck. And congrats on the bike.

I check my spokes pretty frequently and I've only had one ever make a "dud" sound when I tap it with a wrench. I tightened it up until it sang like the rest and keep on rolling.
