from real world experience are schuberth C3 or C4 truly quieter then nolan or shoei?

I had a Schubert C3, but I prefer Arai or Shoei. The C3 was comfortable but heavy and the visor leaked when it rained, but as far as noise goes, I had the impression that the Arai is far quieter than the C3. The Shoei was good too. At present, I wear either an Arai Chaser or a Shark Carbon.

I've had a C3 for almost five years. My only comparison is to an Arai XD-4 and it's definitely quieter than that. But that's not a surprise. While the C3 is quieter, I still use ear plugs. At highway speeds the C3 isn't too bad, but still transmits plenty of wind noise. I doubt any helmet is quiet enough for me to not run ear plugs.

One thing I dont like about the C3 was the difficulty in mounting a communicator. I ended up buying a separate Sena 10-U that integrates into the helmet. I'd expected to be able to just mount a Sena 20S base and avoid buying another communicator system. I'm not a fan of taping a communicator to a helmet (I don't trust tape and have commitment issues for location). That was an added expense, though works ok.

I'll probably replace the C3 this fall or next spring and will be looking for a different helmet. One of my Sena 20S units crapped out and I'm going to give Cardo a try. Between the fussiness with communicator mounting and not being able to avoid ear plugs, I'm shopping around.

I agree with Eville Rich. My C3 is hands down the quietest helmet in my collection. I have a Shoei RF1100, an Arai XD4 and a Shoei Multitech for comparison and have had a Nolan. I also wear earplugs with the C3. I don't use a communicator, so I can't comment on that. I wear my C3 90% of the time, the others just collect dust in the garage.

My only complaints about the C3 are the lack of ventilation and a slight decrease in peripheral vision. The small vents don't move much air. I guess this is a tradeoff to make it quiet. Also, replacement face shields are expensive...like $100. Replacement parts are readily available. This year I replaced the liner and the cheek pads. Now it fits like a new helmet.

Shop around for the helmets to go on sale. I paid $350 USD for mine a few years ago and saw them on sale earlier this year. When it comes time to replace mine, I'll get another one unless something better comes along.

I've never noticed that any helmets to be any quieter than another. My primary priority is cooling/venting. My Arai Corsair is the first helmet that I've used that you can actually feel air movement. For sound control, I use a Sena, and bluetooth my music.

I couldn't agree more. I've spent more time (and money) than I want to admit chasing the quietest helmet. In the end, you sacrifice ventilation for noise suppression and I live in Satan's armpit, so ventilation is a must.
When talking about noise suppression in helmets nothing beats a good set of tunable ear plugs. Add a good com system to help seal off the ear pockets and you can comfortably hear traffic, music and phone calls without experiencing the effects of Listener Fatigue.

As stated by different members, the Schubert’s are more quiet than others because they are rounder. BUT just as import is everything else that interferes with the air before it hits your helmet. Especially turbulence created by the windscreen. The package that is the most quiet might as well be with another brand because of your setup to the bike. These are facts, no personal opinions!

Personal opinion: The Shoei Neotec 2 in combination with the tall OEM windscreen and my length are perfect (for me). But it can be worthless for somebody else.

Good luck,
Stefan.

thank you - I too always use ear plugs - soft pliable silicon that supposedly does -25db. next i am buying taller wind breaker and replacing helmet. i find the white noise tyring and am concerned it hurts my hearing.

my thinking exactly - replacing wind breaker, using earplugs and will replace helmet after

venting is really important consideration in our climate.. rain is not much of an issue..

Same here. That's why I don't worry about the noise as much as cooling. Which is why the OE windshield works for me; allows plenty of air over the top. Oddly enough, my eyes have gotten older, but my ears haven't. And, I've had plenty of white noise over the years.

Tried Schuberth didn’t like, thankfully didn’t order one first, seemed like lousy side vision , never drove fast enough to find out if it was any quieter but I doubt it.

A quiet helmet is like screens, one helmet that is quiet for one individual is noisy for another, its a bit of a lottery. Having said that, my Arais are quiet compared to my Shark and Shoei. The Shark is incredibly noisy and unused, and my Nishua is quietest of all and preferred. Not quite as well ventilated as the XD4, but comfier and quieter, for me.

Yeah, that's another thing I noticed. If the helmet has no vents or protrusions, air will flow around it quieter. You will hear wind going through the vents. I'm guessing the XD4 is pretty noisy. But, I bet it flow a s**t ton of air.

Seems like it all comes down to personal "wants" and how much you're willing to compromise. The more aerodynamic a helmet, the quieter it is. The less airflow on a helmet, the quieter it is. For me, I put airflow at the top of my list of "wants". It's 100 degrees outside at 7pm and it's gonna get hotter this weekend. Right now, I would rather invest in a quality set of tunable ear plugs and have a well ventilated helmet. If I lived somewhere that is much cooler I'd prioritize noise reduction and aerodynamics. Maybe someday Arai or Shoei will figure out how to make the perfect helmet that's both quiet and flows a ton of air. I have heard the Shoei GT Air 2 is a pretty decent compromise but I haven't tried it yet.
