Seeking some input.

I have read forum info on timing chain noise and am confused - I have a question. I have a 2012 Tenere, 22K miles (not done the 24K service yet) and last week noticed a metalic rattle on cold start at 2200 rpm (no noise below or above). Had never made the noise before. Doesn't matter if clutch is pulled or not, or if it is in gear or not, or rolling or not. Noise goes away after engine warms up and does not come back until engine is cold (can ride, stop, restart bike, etc and noise does not happen).

The noise persists until engine temp is over 170 degrees - about 5-8 minutes. After that, it goes away and stays away until engine is cold again.

Jaxon was nice enough to give me some comments yesterday regarding the CCT. Everything I have read on the forum makes it sounds like people with a CCT issue hear a rattle noise for several seconds, not minutes, and it reads like it is at idle when the bike is cold started, not at 2200 rpm.

Does anyone have any insight? I will do my valve check soon and replace the CCT with a manual one but have a trip planned for this week (about 2K miles) and am really torn if I should bag it and just do the engine work?

Thanks for any input, Jack

My 2014 with 8000 miles started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. Sounds like a top end rattle at 2-3k rpm in any gear for the first few minutes riding from cold, then it disappears and doesn't recur when the engine is warm. I'm ignoring it at the moment, but obviously interested if anyone else has solved it.

Thought they cleared this problem up with the Gen 2 bike. Different CCT. My Gen 1 bike started that at about 55,000kms. My Gen 2 bike only has 38,000kms and alls well, so far.

Problem solved - lifted tank and blew out riding debris, lubed all flex points and rattle is gone. Have taken 3 rides and all good.

Thanks to all for your ideas and input,

Jack

Riding debris definition - various flotsam and jetsom that makes its way into the nuks and crannies. Mostly gravel, tar and various chunks of misc stuff that sits on flat parts of the engine and frame.

I am not sure what actually made the rattle stop but my guess is moving the tank and lubricating everything that moves before tightening it all is it.
