Anyone know if you can use a battery charger type Optimate 4 battery to maintain the XTZ 1200 using the 12v outlet comes standard with the bike?
Thank you

Quick answer, no.. The wires are too small and the socket is only rated for use with a gps or phone, ect.

Use a fused lead from the battery with an SAE connector. The same as you would with a Battery Tender.. You can also use this for power to your air compressor.

What he said. I have an Optimate 3 and charge via a Powerlet port that I installed as an un-switched outlet via a PC-8 fuse block. The Optimate should come with a battery harness with it's own connector, mine did. That works very well too. I have three ends that plug into the Optimate III. One is alligator clamps for a plain battery. One is the pigtail for the battery that was supplied, and the third is one I ordered extra with the powerlet port plug. Love the Optimate. Great quality and has kept a FJR battery alive for 160k miles and 7 years. Worth every penny of the cost.

The 12 volt outlet is not hot with the ignition off, so you can plug in the battery charger there (the wiring is fine for a battery charger, btw) but it won't do anything....

GS 1200 In my previous battery can be charged with the Optimate 4 through the outlet that brings the bike's ignition is off course. So wondering if the Yamaha can.
Thank you.

The answer is NO. Electricity will not flow in either direction when the key is off for the factory 12V outlet. It's powered via a relay, so there is no path to the battery when the relay is not energized, which only happens when the key is on. The Super Tenere's 12V outlet is switched. Apparently your previous GS1200 had an un-switched power outlet.

Nearly all 12V outlets that are factory supplied are switched.
