The thread over at ADV has all the excuses as to why this is nothing.

I think the excuse book is printed somewhere and handed out at BMW clubs or something. Did you ever get one?

Anyway it boils down to the fact that the bike is so far ahead of the competition that anything is excusable.

I wonder when the reported head shakes will be come an issue.

In all my time in the car business I've never seen a new model release that didn't see some sort of update, campaign, or recall - not one. Most are benign, and nowadays simple software issues that get resolved very early on. Sometimes, though, it's something like this that leaves you scratching your head saying, "With all of the testing they do, how the hell did they not catch and fix THAT before going to market?".

I can also say with absolute certainty, German manufacturers are the most arrogant to deal with - they NEVER mis-engineer anything, and their cultist followers lap it up like thirsty dogs.

Oh Dear, another one...

Two recalls before the bike is actually available must be some sort of record, the well known BMW phrase of "They all do that sir" seems to be moving from an optional extra to a standard feature.

And on one of the first UK tests it was reported at a steady 75mph cruise the bike went into a tank slapper so violent that it tore off the lockstops.

It is quite sad that such an influential bike is having these problems, I loved the old GS and BMW were bringing new riders to biking with their luxurious showrooms and smarmy sales folk, in fact the one thing that seems to ruin BMW is BMW themselves, with eight years of the last model they never sorted the Final Drive properly or resolved the silly little issues like FPC's that regularly blow and could never seem to get a fual gauge to work, now it appears they have not done too much homework on the latest model.

Lets hope it just drives potential owners to other brands, despite the press previously trying to convince the world that nothing compared I know depending what you want most the other bikes are pretty damn good, the Tenere was obviously my favourite, but the Guzzi Stelvio, Ducati Multistrada and Triumph are all fantastic in their own way, and the Honda X-Tourer and Kawaski Versys aren't too bad either, and I bet the new KTM will be a fantastic tool.

Enduro Pro mode made me chuckle :D

Last summer on a trip out west my bro in law and I were refueling. Half a dozen or so beemers pull in and start talking to him. One gentleman began to tell bro in law he better stick to pavement with such a heavy bike. Those Yamahas are not made for the rough stuff. Bro in law asked how long did it take to ride out from Tn? The reply: Oh we didn't ride we trailered ::025::

PRICELESS

But this is the point. You now have a bunch of bikes with different compromises that are all more versatile than most things that have appeared for years and anyone who wants a bike to fit them can now get a better fit off the showroom floor than before. This type of bike is not really suitable for a best/worst kind of comparison.

It would be better if magazines would just point out where they work best and where on the scale they might fit. There will always be oil leaking, tank slapping, software bug ridden bikes released in the mix at some point but by and large they are reliable and have different target uses which is good.

It would be sad if they all ended up being nothing but sports bikes in disguise because of the press who live in a slightly strange universe where they don't pay for or live with any of them and only ride on motorways.
