suppose that as the title of the post says, "just to heat a cup of soup / coffee", why not use a simple 12v heater ?? .. if we were to cook, or we did not have a source of energy, yes, such Maybe alcohol or compressed gas would be the best option, but having 12v at hand, a 12v heater seems like the smallest option.

Check the amp draw on that. The 12v outlet has a low fuse rating. A cig lighter adapter on a battery tender connection(SAE connector) will remedy that.

If California wasn't always just a hot fart away from being on fire I would buy one of these. Way simpler than carrying fuel and it folds flat for easy storage. Sadly we are always in "fire danger" around here.

I'm a fan of the MSR Windburner. Everything fits inside: fuel, burner, stand. The cooker nests inside a plastic cup, and tops off with a lid. It has enough fuel for a weekend(maybe two) of boiling water for coffee and dehydrated meals, for one person.

A friend uses thermite, but its not totally practical.
These military gel alcohol stoves are compact and pretty decent. Nothing to go wrong as long as you have a lighter.

As Yamathumper pointed out, Pepsi can. A nice upgrade is a small can of fancy feast cat food, empty and clean it, punch holes in it liberally about 1/2" above the bottom, pour in a small amount of denatured alcohol and place your TOAKS cup on top and whammo! I have a small x-shampoo bottle from a hotel room cleaned and filled with alcohol, lasts about 2 weeks. There are fancy titanium stoves that fold flat which accomplish the same mission....for $30 more.
