I would assume its metal, it would have to be to be DOT approved.
I'm not quite sure if that's the case anymore. If memory serves me right my 2005 Goldwing had a plastic tank. Just king of wondering about rust prevention during winter storage(for a metal tank).

Pretty sure it is metal. I have seen some pics with a magnetic tank bag.

It is metal.

There are plastic ones that are dot approved as my KTM 950SM has a plastic tank.

Thanks-

The inside of the tank must have some type of coating to prevent rust? And I guess one more question and then I'll shut up-the fuel filter is where on these bikes??

I'm quessing its inside the tank, above the fuel outlet. It gets filtered before leaving the tank. Like older bikes that had the petcock, take out two screws pull out and clean screen.

On feul injection the filter is part of the fuel pump and isn't really cleanable and costly to replace.

I believe metal fuel tanks on bikes are galvanized for corrosion protection. From experience in working on vintage bikes, I can attest that this only goes so far in preventing corrosion, but if you keep the tank reasonably full when sitting for long periods and don't let the gas get too skunky, you're unlikely to have any problems.

I don't see any fuel filter maintenance on the schedule and the shop manual doesn't show any screens or filters - perhaps there is a filter internal to the fuel pump.

it is metal...when I saw the mule unit in Minnesota @ the Hitching Post in Hopkins

I threw a magnetic First Gear tank bag on it and it worked the treat.!!

Appreciate the info folks-thanks! As long as we're still of the subject of fuel tanks, any talk from the after market of building a larger fuel tank?

No, and I'd be surprised if anyone would - the 6-gal tank is already fairly generous by the standards of the class. And on these new FI bikes with integrated high-pressure pumps, bigger tanks are non-trivial to engineer and super-expensive to make - nothing like the carb'ed dual-sports. Might eventually be someone doing aux tanks (like are made for the IB crowd) to go on the rear rack or something like this. But I wouldn't hold breath.

There are some pretty good fuel bottle and aux fuel rack solutions you can easily homebrew these days if you just want to carry a few extra liters or so.
