I've searched all over the web and here and can't seem to find the number for the key blank. Anybody have this information?

I had one made at my dealer, blank was in stock, $11 bucks. Looks just like my original's.

I had five keys cut for both my Super Tenere and my Stratoliner (same key blank for both) and the local locksmith used ILCO blanks with the number X248 YM63. Five keys cut = $15.00 total.

That's definitely an advantage of not having a immobilizer on stateside bike. I'd be really leary of putting my immobilizer key on a duplication machine with all the magnetic flux generated from the motor.

Thanks. The Ilco numbers were what I was looking for. I found this on the FJR forum: Equivalent part numbers: Ilco YM63, Taylor X248, Curtis YM63,Silca YH35R
Same blank is used for: Yamaha: YZF, FJR, FZR, FZ1, R1, GTS, XJ, V Star, Road Star, Royal Star, Venture, F1, Warrior & TT-R models - 1993+. Vino Scooter 2001+.

My Ace Hardware didn't have any of these but I'm guesing many location will.

Hopefully these keys are not soft like the stock keys?

With so many chipped auto keys these days, locksmiths are well aware of the issues and no how to duplicate keys w/chips w/o problems. As long as they have a chipped key blank, (if you want the immobilizer to work), for your application, they can usually duplicate the key. The only issues I've had with chipped keys have been VW and Smart car keys. VW's need to have all the keys re-coded at once, so only the dealer can do it, and they have the car in the loop as well. The local key shops just couldn't get a blank for the Smart.

Since this thread reminded me I need a couple of extra keys made, I got that done yesterday at the local ACE. Thanks to the OP for the reminder. They had the standard ilco blanks which are marked YM63 and X248. These are a bit tougher than the soft Yamaha keys and I can re-confirm that it's the same blank as the FJR uses. Cost me $2.29+tax for each key.

Is it true that CDN Tenere's need to be synced up with the red master key. The previous owner only gave me one black and the red key

Good question. Mine (also Canadian) came with the red "program key" and two black ones. I was going to make a copy to a generic blank just for the gas filler and side cases. When I do I'll have to try it in the ignition to see if it works.

I know this is an old thread but I just got two keys from ACE for $4.98. They had the YH63 that colorider had mentioned in this post back in 2012.
