I happen to have as you mentioned "ugly as shit light on top of another light" and love the looks of it...

...but I don't have the tail light on top of the tail light like you do now. ;)

I chose the rigid D2's as well, and use them as much in the day time as I do at night. They are super easy to install and super bright! The bike is much more visible to drivers with these lights shining at them.
I like the way they look mounted on the bars, but mounted mine under the headlights for two reasons. 1- They are much better protected off road than mounted on the crash bars. The bike has been down a few times, and I never have to worry about them getting broken. 2- They fill the big void perfectly.

I am a big fan of the rigid lights, great product for a reasonable price...I have two spots mounted under headlights, two floods mounted low on crash bars, run the floods day and night so to be seen. and when I need to light up the night I can...... trying to talk my riding buddy into getting a set, he is leaning that way . and just so you know at 75mph I bottomed the front forks going through a dip on a country road, no damage to lights or bike but had to reset aim of lights, and two small marks on fender... have since tightened up the front a bit......
