I will post pictures of when its done. Basically I use a quick release fire extinguisher mount to hold a 1.5 liter bottle of fuel.

Maybe I should go into business selling them I think the setup is the shinizzle...

The idea came to me on one of my Idaho to Wisconsin and back rides. The gap between fuel stops became unpredictable at the most inopportune time. I usually don't get to much over 200 miles per tank. This time I ran it up to 230 sweating bullets. I never have ran the tank dry I should just to see how far it can go on a tank.

Most tanks have close to 1.5 gallons left when the reserve kicks in and starts flashing. No two are identical due to minor differences in the float arm, but I'm sure you noticed that you're usually putting in less than 5 gallons to fill the tank if you do it right at reserve.

That is about how mine is. Fuel idiot light comes on and I pump in almost 4.1 gallons every time. So I have a pretty big buffer to running it to empty.

Yup. And if I am going to need extra fuel it will be more than a liter or two. At 45 mpg, 1.5 liters works out to about 18 extra miles.

Ya got to admit though that riding an extra 18 miles beats the hell out of pushing the beast up hill 1/4 mile !!!!!

What can you do to make it harder to steal?

I have a 33 oz MSR fuel bottle in a tool tube mounted on the side of the top box. I am considering putting a second one on the other side. At least you can't see that it is a fuel bottle, but it isn't locked...or quick release.

I didn't want to store mine on its side. As far as theft I rarely leave my bike when traveling and have never had anything stolen when I have, knock on wood I guess.

The Primus bottles also fit in the tool tubes. They have a clamp as well.

I got one of these from Rocky Mountain ATV. Up to two would fit in a 35L Pelican case, but have yet to try carry it that way (I don't know if it would leak with elevation gain/depressurization; presumably not with the rubber seal). It's designed to be easy to strap on just about anywhere.
