Hurricane irene has just passed over Crooked Island, Bahamas and is tracking towards Cat Island.

Irene is currently located at 22.7 degrees N and 74.3 degrees W.
Our beach house is located at 24.3 degrees N and 75.3 degrees W. [located on Bennett's Harbour, Cat Island, Bahamas].

Just got off the phone with some folks on Cat Island and they are battening down the place. The house is high enough [I hope] up the beach to withstand a possible 11 foot storm surge. I am more concerned about the pine trees and coconut palms snapping off and becoming projectiles. I did not get to the project on my list called: "install hurricane straps to rafters and toplates!! Crap!!!

Just watching MSNBC Hurricane Tracker and hoping for the best outcome and that our Bahamian friends are safe after it has passed.

Does that mean we can get some S10 Vs Hurricane video's? ::008::

Hope everything turns out OK and it fizzles a bit though ::017::

Cheers

Thanks Graham....

Irene passed just off the western side of Cat Island around 2:00 am this morning. Winds were reported from the weather staion there at 6:30 am - 143 mph. I talked to some folks this morning on the island and they have a lot of damage but have not ventured over to the beach properties yet. They are safe and commented that it was a "real bad" hurricane. Apparently it's supposed to move to a Cat 4 before it reaches the US East coast and the latest computer model has it tracking farther west than originally forecasted.

I hope it fizzles some by Sunday. I'm riding the Super10 to Boston this weekend...

You may want to consider cancelling - there could be a lot of debri on the roads from the strong winds, not to mention flood waters ??? ???

As usual, the weather guys sensationalized this one. I am right on the east coast between Cocoa Beach and Daytona, and we've had worse weather from afternoon thunderstorms than we got from this storm. I'm sure that it is an impressive storm out at sea, but they've been talking on the radio and local news weather about all of the feeder bands that have been "pummeling" the coastal regions with wave after wave of rain squalls, but in reality, there was just a little wind and rain. I've been out riding most everyday and have seen very little rain.

Glad to hear it was a non-event for you. I guess it's best to plan for the worst and hope for the best. If the worst is a little inconvenience in evacuating for a day or two, it's better than any injuries that could occur as a result of not taking it seriously. We don't get this sort thing up hear too often so I'm planning for at least a couple days of power outage.

The first half of my trip is for work, and my manager and I have been discussing how to rearrange things. I am currently just past the worst of a head cold (I hope), I've been scrambling all week with the preparations and still not feeling all that ready, and yesterday I had to call the bank and get them to shut down my credit card due to fraudulent charges on my statement. Riding out into a hurricane, half sick, half frazzled, on a bike that's breaking IBA rule #5, with no credit card, is perhaps not the best plan. So if my manager can sort out the scheduling I will cancel the work trip part of this.

These storms really tax an area’s emergency services like PD and FD. Outsiders heading into the cone, or residents going out into the storm (which, believe it or not some actually do here), aren’t things that are particularly helpful to those guys and gals. On the other hand, at least here in West Central Florida, our utilities seem to be amazing when it comes to getting out after the storm and getting the power quickly restored. Hope that’s the same all the way up the east coast and they get the lights on quickly.

Let’s hope the damn thing does fizzle, but otherwise you all up the east coast hang on this weekend and good luck.

Come on, Koinz! Katherine, "Tall Trails" awaits your report. >:D

In all seriousness, this is probably pretty good advice.

Well, Irene has passed. Not as bad as expected, but I did lose power for the night. Generator did it's job.
Lots of local flooding to contend with now.

My area got hit hard. I live 2 blocks from the Pamlico River in Eastern NC, it will take a week to restore all power. I was without for 18 hrs but I have generators. Lost a huge oak out at the farm. It fell on the barn that I keep my Tenere in. Luckily I had the foresight to keep my bike at a friends house during the storm. No complaints, I'm blessed compared to some. 8)

We skated by unscathed. Except for a spruce tree out back that was blown over in a previous storm that I had staked down (is leaning over again). No power loss, I was actually surprised. We usually at least get a blip or two during bad weather. Some friends in our area did lose power, not sure if it's been restored yet.

I talked to my parents who are north from me, in the Lehigh Valley area, and they had tree limbs dropping on the house, and my dad's truck has a gully in the roof now from where a limb fell on it.

Ken,

Was thinking about you and that area yesterday.......I'm so glad that things weren't worse for you (and that you had moved your Tenere to safe haven).
