Hi,

I am after a little bit of help please, I have bought a Remus Hexacone Titanium exhaust for my Super Ten and need to know the exact amount of BHP increase for insurances purposes.

Can anyone advise the best way to find out?

Cheers in advance for any help ;)

Yeah, I would not report a horse power increase with your insurance company because it is not significant. If you were to perform some type of modification that greatly increased engine power, like a turbo charger, then you'd be required to state the modification on your insurance declaration.

You might see a 2 - 5 hp increase with a free flowing exhaust, but you could put that same bike on the dyno a dozen times and end up with a dozen different results, so who is to say that you have any reportable increase at all? Just my 2c

There is a dyno chart on the Remus S10 page. If you cycle through the bike photos, one of them is the dyno chart.

http://www.remus.at/php/index.php?cmd=cmdFrontendProducts&iProductModel=437

Strange how the Y axis shows speed and not rpm...

Looks like about a 1hp increase with the db killer in and a 7 hp increase with it out.

Thats a handsome pipe, and according to the distributor here in CA it never needs repacking and has a lifetime warranty to back it up.

Mortiis, if you have to put something, LeoVince posted a dyno chart comparing theirs against stock. Obviously not the same exhaust but probably very close. It might be of help if you need it.
I would go the route of no HP increase, just weight savings. ;)

I have heard from several people that they found that the only benefit to an exhaust can change was more noise.
Ugly: Even if you change the can that big shield still is not overly attractive.
Flow: The Catalytic Converter is not in the big can up high and is lower-down in the exhaust. It is pretty free-flowing.
Weight: It may be big but is only around 2 pounds heavier than the lightweight loud cans. It IS mostly empty.
Noise: Stock meets Federal specs and aftermarket units may not.
Power: The Ignition and Injection tables in the ECM are tuned for the stock muffler. If you swap the muffler to a louder version and change the lower exhaust AND get a power commander ype unit you may be able to get a little more power at the expense of lower gas mileage.
Most people who tell you it has more power are hearing the noise and that is convincing them that it is faster. Cards on your spokes would be a cheaper way to get noise without power.
I have gone though it with bikes and cars, but the before and after dyno tests that show higher power from an exhaust change with a stock ECM set-up are usually tests with the before being vehicle warm and the ECM in closed-loop mode controlling everything perfectly. After the vehicle cools down, the exhaust is changed, the battery is disconnected or some other technique is used to tell the ECM to relearn the bikes parameters, the vehicle is dynoed while cold and in ECM Open Loop relearning mode. This relearning mode is environmentally no good, but for the first few starts and runs has more power. A real before and after would need to be done a hot before and after wait a month later and again test while hot.

Flame proof suit on now.....

NO flame here - I completely agree. There are no real advantages to adding an after market pipe. None of our bikes have them.

Is there any real advantage removing the cat and leaving the stock can on?

Can't help you with the can numbers but you are doing the right thing with the insurance. Insurance is a contract of utmost good faith, meaning you are under a positive duty to apprise the underwriter of material facts. If you need to call on the policy and a non-disclosure comes to the attention of the insurer a claim may very well be declined. It's easy to say that won't happen, 'cos you'll be able to put a bike back to stock, but you never know under what circumstances the bike might be seen by an insurer's motor engineer (if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident) before you are able to intervene.

I can speak only to the norms of the UK insurance industry, which may well differ from those observed across the pond. Motorcycle insurance here is typically very carefully underwritten, calls to intermediaries are recorded as future evidence of disclosure/ non-disclosure, and insurers also share information (which again can trip up the unwary).

Mortiis, have you gotten it yet? Give us some details on it and how you like it. It was one of my possibilities as well along with Greg's carbon can.
