I've been riding for about 30 years and have never used any heated clothing (yes, I've been freezing my butt off!). With a ST on order I've just started to do a lot of research on the products. My big question is - with all of the electronics to add to the ST, how many watts are actually available to dedicate to these add-on items?

Also have a 1981 Yamaha XS1100SH and cannot find total watts available on that model. If you happen to know or can direct me to a link I sure would appreciate it.

According to the service manual, the alternator output is 42.9 amps at 14 volts or 600.6 watts ( volts times amps equals watts).

Welcome Is that XS 1100 your main ride? I have been riding an XS1100 SF since 1979. I'm ready for the Super Tenere. I'll always keep the XS because we honeymooned on it in 1980 to Yellowstone.

PS I've always wanted to visit that Comstock area maybe someday on the new bike.

hey sith, just my $.02 worth, but Gerbings seem to have the least amount of issues out there and offer awesome customer service direct to you. Lifetime warranty on their products. Others can back me on this. Second to that would be Aerostich (Rider warehouse)

HTH,
Hmm, I thought it was closer to 800 watts, but I didn't look it up. ::) I use my power sparingly anyway. Led lights, gps, heated grips and jacket.
I wonder what is used before accessories are added?

I didn't realize the alternator was that big, as 600 is more than most road bikes and plenty for jacket, gloves and even lights. Of course, if you sit idling all the time you don't get rated power.

Figure about 77W for a Gerbing jacket at full heat and 27-ish watts for their gloves on full heat. I seldom need full heat, which will take me down into the single digits F on the FJR. I think it's Warm-N-Safe that has a 100W jacket.

Generically, it takes 300-350 watts to run the bike lights, fuel pump, ignition, etc. There are many folks riding with 77W Gerbing jackets on early WeeStroms that only make about 400W.

After living with the 28 amp alternator on my ST1100, I like having the extra head room for what ever electrical goodies I add. I don't put a ton of stuff on but I do power a GPS, CB radio, heated grips and outlets for heated gear which is mostly gloves and socks but I do have a Kanetsu vest from Riders Warehouse. That item wil most likely be replaced by a jacket liner as I am pretty sure the Super Tenere will not have the same level of weather protection as my ST1300.

I run a Gerbing's jacket liner and Dual Star grip heaters on an '03 KLR. I turn the heat down at stops. No problems. But I can see the headlight dim ever so slightly as the Heat-Troller cycles.

I mounted one of these on the dash of my DL1000. Looks factory and now I can tell if I am getting close to pulling too much juice! Also nice just to be able to keep an eye on the battery level.....
If and when I get the ST, I will for sure be adding one again. ^-^
