Getting closer....but first

Okay...I am getting closer to my decision on purchasing a Tenere. I know this is beating something that has been discussed and discussed and discussed, but please bear with me and have a little patience as I don't have a lot of money.

Do I need to be worried about the headlight harness or is this an isolated incident with just maybe a certain batch of connectors?
What should I be trying to get the bike for (I know money) not counting TT&L (That does vary state to state) but including all fees
ie: shipping and handling and such. I do want to support my local shop, however, I do not want to be the only one making their
pool or mercedes payment for them! I live in North Texas by the way.

As said before, I am wanting to replace a bike I had several years ago (2004 BMW1150GSA). I will not be going out of state to purchase as I am trading in a 2008 FJR1300.

Thanks alot for you time and answers

Rexford

PS... Is it pronounced Tenere or Tenere..... ::)

I hope the harness is an isolated condition as I bought one even after reading about the problem. I love the bike and sold My C-14 before getting this one. I support local dealers and went with the dealership that had one in stock. Another dealer gave me a test ride but there was no follow-up or good offer so I went elsewhere. Customer service is nice but the dollar sells . If the dealer that offered me the test ride made me a good offer, I would have bought it there but I never even got a phone call.
Go get your Tenere. Support local shops, you will be going back there. Yamaha offers a discount on accessories after your purchase, you can use the tank bag as it is a nice one.

If you are trading in you are probably setting yourself up for at least a $1K loss on your FJR. Sell the FJR privately, make more off the sale and then shop where you want, for the price you want. Don't worry about harness or anything else reliability wise, for every person talking about a problem on the www, there are 1000+ without the issue riding everyday.

Quit beating yourself up and get on with it already.

Not sure what going into a bike butt first means Murph.......? I am not against Chick-fil- a

And I would try to sell the FJR it is up for sale at this time....but I am getting a little impatient. Besides, I got a heck of a deal on the FJR and what they offered to take for a trade in so far makes me happy! They will sell me the bike for $12,750 but than they added about $800 + worth of set up and freight (seemed kinda high to me)

Sorry, but you teed this one up. I just gotta swing! :)

You had a GS1200. (A)

And the headlight harness on the S10 could be a deal breaker?

Pretty funny if you think about it. But it is true that it is hard to find things about the S10 to worry about.

As far price, in my opinion if you paid msrp for the S10, you still got great value. Especially in the long run. So it is hard to get a bad deal.

By the way, since you know about the headlight harness issue beforehand, with little effort you can avoid it ever being a problem for you. Many have.

And I'm a big fan of Chick-Filet. Good food. Excellent customer service. And they let their employees spend Sunday with their family.

Welcome from Graham. If you haven't you might call around to various dealers and ask them, "I got this offer from so and so, what can you do for me"? I bought mine from Burleson Power Sports and they made me a pretty good deal. Even if you buy locally their still going to charge you the same hourly rate for service no matter where you bought it. Good luck with your purchase and lets get together and ride sometime. Where abouts are ya, I'm in North Texas but you can still ride another full day and still be in North Texas :)

The headlight harness problem is pretty minor in the overall scheme of things. As said, I wouldn't let it affect your decision one iota - worst case, one headlight goes out and you mod it a little to fix it. I don't think it is a sample defect problem although it probably varies from bike to bike how tightly the connector connects, how hot it gets in the headlight compartment, etc. (Let's not debate headlight mods in this thread - there is another for that.)

The bike is definitely being discounted by most dealers, but with a trade-in, its really hard to define exactly what a good deal might be for you. If you trade is in good shape, you should be getting around book wholesale value and I would think up to $500-$1K off MSRP on the new bike might be feasible (with no extra F&S charges), but again, it really depends on your local market and your negotiation skills. You can almost always do better if you sell your trade privately.

Buy it. You won't regret it. I had an '06 FJR1300, and IMHO the Super Ténéré is much better mount, in all sorts of ways. At least for me.

As has been mentioned, you shouldn't worry a bit about the headlamp sub-harness. If you get that has the problem it's covered under warranty, and even if you decide to repair it yourself the *fix* can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Regardless, it'll still work great.

If your trading in a bike what they are quoting you for the new one really doesn't really matter... Only the *difference* matters. If they tell you that the new Super Ténéré is $25,000.00, but they're giving you $22,000.00 for your FJR that's only a $3-grand difference. OTOH, if they are quoting you $13,999.00 for the Super Ténéré but giving you $8,999.00 for your FJR, that's a $5-grand difference... So what kind of difference are you seeing from your dealer of choice, and is it a number you're happy with? That's the question.

Just my two centavos... YMMV.

Oh, and how do you pronounce Ténéré? That's easy... Just click here: http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=tenere

I think it's pronounced " 10 uh ray " more or less. There's a video on YouTube that has a French announcer saying the word during the Dakar Rally if you want to hear it your self.

With an acute accent over each e, that should be "tay-nay-ray." Think "resume" with each e having the accent (I don't know how to make the acute accent over the "e" on this forum). Don't mess with me, I was French Club president in high school. :D Seriously, pronounce it that way though and you get could beat up.

We we talk funny in Oklahoma anyway so "10 uh ray" works for me. ::008::

Pronunciation depends on the language used. I first heard Tenere pronounced in Italy in 1987 when I stopped to help a rider late at night on the road between Bari and Rome. When I looked at the bike and saw it was not one sold in the US he pronounced it with accent on the next to last vowel as is also done in Spanish language. I've used this since.

Here's a video with Tinariwen singing " Tenere Taqhim Tossam", If your not familar with Tinariwen here's a short bio

> Tinariwen (Tamashek-Berber: tinariwén "deserts", plural of ténéré "desert") is a band of Tuareg-Berber musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali.

I was fortunate to see them at the Bonnaroo music festival a few years back. They are a great concert band.
