Given the lack of smoothest in the shifting on my 3000+ mile 2014 S10 ES, I have been thinking about going to full synthetic oil.

As the Florida temperatures never regularly dip towards freezing ... thought about doing 20W-50 Mobil 1 motorcycle oil.

Any Florida riders use 20W-50 in their S10?

FWIW, I had occasion to speak to Yamaha UK Tech dept the other day, about clutch drag and creep when in traffic and after a few minutes the chap suggested I drop the oil and replace with semi synthetic as he said it would create less of a viscous coupling effect, he did not mention or suggest weight of the oil.

The thicker viscosity of the 50W is going to give harder shifting. The Owners Manual shows that you can run 40W up to 110F, which is pretty hot even for Florida.

I gave the same oil a try last summer. No appreciable difference that I noticed except for the cost ???

Back to running 10-40 Yami-dino because my local dealer gave me a nice discount.

I was told by my dealer NOT to use synthetic until my second oil change. I believe he said Yamaha does not recommend it until then.

I run the full synthetic Rotella T. I have had great success with this oil in 4 different bikes and a couple of hundred thousand miles.

In the air cooled days, 20W-50 made some sense. Modern vehicles of all types generally don't need or like heavier oil.

My bike has 10w40 too. The gearbox works perfectly. (i'm on Miami Lakes). But Just used the bike for 1 month since I bought it.

BTW: I want to change the oil. I would love to do it myself, but I dont have the space (here where I leave the parking are community and security doesn't permit to work on cars/motorcycles (I Already had an argument with one just for change a headlight on the parking). So, you know a place were I can take my bike? not that super expensive agency that charge 120U$S for work plus the oil....

Thanks guys!

Do you have a Walmart nearby? Often, especially those with an auto center attached, will allow you do an oil change in their parking lot. And when you're done, they'll take your old oil as well!

Hi,
I run Yamalube 20W 50 dino up here in New England year round. The tranny shifts as well as when I was using 10w 40 full syn. at a fraction of the cost and dare I say it, I have less and sometimes no cam chain clatter at start up. And yes I have not replaced the tensioner.
Later,
Norm

I use the rotella t6 syn 5-40 also down in delray beach. It seems to work fine. Yes, the fan will come on at stop lights when it's in the 80's and temp reaches 220f but no problems. Underway even in the heat it runs in the 170s. As someone else said, the thicker oil 50wt will make it clunker to shift till it warms.
