Last Saturday I went to get a custom seat made by Rick Mayer at his shop in Anderson, CA. I rode up on Friday, spent the night in Anderson and got the seat made on Saturday morning. Once the seat was done it was time to hit the road and I decided to take a scenic and dirty route back to SF.

I got off I-5 in Corning and decided to swing by Black Butte Lake on my way westward. The road was initially pretty boring.

What’s this up ahead, cattle ranch?

Nope, Buffalo ranch.

Not far from the buffalo ranch is Black Butte lake. Here’s the Super Tenere taking a rest in the shade.

View of the lake.

Road starts to get a little curvy and more scenic west of the lake.

Next the road turns to dirt. Game on!

To get from the lake to Covelo I just let my GPS map the route because when I looked at a paper map it seemed like there was only one road to take. However, my GPS found a creative short cut. This is the nice part of this little “road”. There were several sections that were rocky and rutted. Nothing too bad, but it was a bit sketchy at times.

Luckily the short cut put me back on a “normal” road for a few miles.

The pavement turned back to dirt for the next 30 miles.

Still a ways to go to Covelo.

Super Tenere is lovin’ all this dirt and ready for more, but still has time to pose like it’s at *$.

Nice scenery as I was comin’ down the mountain.

If your ever out in this area and have already sampled Poonkinney road and want to try something different, there’s always Indian Dick.

Dirt is done. Back on pavement on Hwy 162.

The End.

Nice RR, thanks for sharing! I've not been in CA since 2005. It sure is a pretty place.

Nice RR. I am interested in your route. Went over 162 in early June and experienced MUD and snow. I need to do it again so I can enjoy it more.

Great pics. Makes me want to ride, sat and watched it rain all weekend. That's okay though, we need the rain badly. How's the seat?
