How long will oil last in an opened container? I found an opened quart of 85w/140 gear oil in my garage. Its been resealed but its Probably years old. Can it still be used? Looking to change my final drive oil. Just wondering if oil will breakdown just sitting in a container.

It's probably ok, but why take the change ?? Get a new jug, seal it and keep it dark and cool, and you'll use the whole thing eventually.

That's pretty heavy stuff, if I recall correctly. Might want to check the recommended weight. I may be wrong about that ... going from memory and it ain't so hot these days. More of a REMory .... good luck. R

Yes, spec is something like 80/90, although some folks do use this wider-range stuff successfully. I tend to try and stay closer to spec.

The mfgs typically quote a shelf life of motor oil of 5-years, assuming it is kept sealed. I doubt gear oil is any different. This is probably conservative and you could go longer. But as mentioned, it is such a tiny quantity of oil and relatively inexpensive, so hardly seems like an area to pinch pennies.

I decided to splurge and get a new bottle. Is Valvoline 75W90 synthetic acceptable? I believe spec is 80W90 Dino.

I've got over 26,000 miles on my Super Tenere, and I've used Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 synthetic for the last 21,000+ miles with no issues (first 5,000 miles or so I used Yamaha's own dino gear lube).

I'm sure you'll be fine with the Valvoline 75W-90. ::008::

The 75W90 is plenty close enough, in my opinion. It's the common substitute if you're going with a GL4/GL5 auto-parts-store oil. I'm running the Castrol, a bunch use the M1, and I'm sure this Valvoline is good stuff too.
