Emergency flashers stuck on

Turned on my emergency flashers while working my way through some tight traffic but once through could not turn them off. I pressed, punched, wiggled, squeezed and whatever else I could think of, but they would not turn off. I started wonder if the Smart Turn gadget I’d installed had some how interfered with them. I couldn’t remember if the switch changed positions, on vs. off at the moment.

When I got home I switched the bike off and on again but the lights were still blinking and pressing the button was having no effect. Shut off the bike, got out of my gear and continued fiddling with it. Finally the button popped out and the flashers turned off.

I took the switch pod apart and blew it out with contact cleaner/lubricant and compressed air but it still doesn’t feel smooth and like it might get stuck again.

Anyone else have this issue?

The one with the red triangle symbol. More than one rider has hit the flashers, then started stabbing the mode button to turn them off...

Who uses the flashers anyway? :D

Don't feel too bad. The Gen I bikes didn't have them. I added a manual hazard switch to my 2012 S10 that would work with the key off/out.

I like having them on my '15, but rarely use them.

Almost every time I let a non-Tenere rider try my bike they hit the flasher button when trying to start it.
:D

WJ - You may have slightly welded the copper contacts int he switch if they'd gotten a touch of corrosion in there. Corrosion increases resistance and resistance builds heat FAST. Glad they came unstuck. I'd just occasionally hit them again with contact cleaner and cycle the switch to keep the switch functional.

Thanks for the replies. I don't use them much either, once when we had to stop at the side of an unlit rural road on a moonless night (couldn't see my hand in front of my face when I shut off the bike) and then again the other day to negotiate some snarled traffic due to an accident. The switch seems to be working better now that the contact cleaner/lubricant has had some time to work. The location of the switch is pretty hard to hit accidentally, unlike my ST1300 which had the hazard light switch on top of the left switch pod. Seems like almost every time I reached over the bars to reset the odometer or MPG gauge I accidentally turned on the flashers with my forearm.

My 13 Super Tenere has the Euro style left hand control. Which adds the hazards and a pass trigger that unfortunately doesn't work.

I was on a demo ride on an R1 and accidentally turned on the flashers. I didn't have a clue how to turn them off. The ride was almost over so it really didn't matter. It was not in a high traffic area. The Yamaha rep came back and was a real @$$ over it when I told him I didn't know how to turn them off. then he proceeded to tell me the wrong way to turn them off as I followed his instructions to the letter. He became even more of an @$$ and reached over the turned them off. I still don't know how to turn them off. I think he pushed the hazard button then hit the turn signal cancel button. The bikes I have owned that have hazard flashers you just hit the same button again and they go off. Who knows what they are doing now with some of the bikes now. You would think they would all have pretty close to the same switches as a standard to make them familiar and there by safer.

It's actually pretty easy to wire up the flash to pass so it works. I did this on my '12 with the same switch. Pretty sure you can find instructions here in this forum if you search.

Thanks for the information. I'll search for it. Maybe a winter project.

Mine got stuck on. I was using them in accessory mode. Once I cycled the ignition they turned off. I would disconnect the battery and try to reset. From what you said it sounds like your hazard switch may have failed.
Yeah, I tried cycling the ignition at the time, thinking it was an electronic glitch, but they were still on when I turned the key back on. It appears the switch got stuck in the pushed-in position, in other words a mechanical failure. I seem to have it working again for now at least. I will definitely need to keep an eye on it. I’m thinking that part of the problem is extremely infrequent use.
