Does a "CA" in your US VIN # mean California model?

Just got my VIN # and I attempted a search, but I couldn't find an answer. I am not in California.

Anyone know?

Thanks! Dave

Found one at Power Yamaha / KTM in Salem, Oregon HoebSTer. Only about 30 miles from me! I cancelled my order with Beaverton after they told me "maybe end of March"... I am on my way to pick it up in an hour and they have been a real pleasure to deal with!

Can't wait!

Hopefully I can contribute to this forum the way you and others have as I gain some experience with this bike, it's a great resource.

Hopefully Power's sales dept is better than their service dept.

I and a small group of other FJR owners, (4 total), had them do our valve adjustments in June of '10 and they mostly did ok, but they got the valve cover gasket on my FJR crimped when they installed it, (new gasket), and it leaked oil on the first ride I took. I took it back and they refused to accept that it was their work that caused the problem, pointing to another gasket lower down that they believed was the problem. That gasket was only $5, so I told them fine, replace it, only they didn't have the gasket anyway, so I left and ordered it online and replaced it myself. No go, it was indeed the valve cover gasket. I took it back again, but they insisted it was not their work. I left it with them the first time to examine for a couple of days, so wasn't going to just let them have it for days again to tell me it wasn't their work that was causing the oil leak. I had the 10 n' 10 rally coming up imminently, so ended up taking it to Beaverton Bob's.

Guess what they found? Not only was it indeed the valve cover gasket, but the tech at Power, (Jesse James wannabe), had also spooged every bit of it with Yamabond in an attempt to fix his mistake w/o buying a new gasket to replace the one he damaged during install. (the damage during install does happen now and then due to the tight clearance, but once you crush the gasket by bolting the cover on, it will never seal properly and has to be replaced). It ended up costing me $400 to have Bend over Bob's remove the valve cover, tediously clean all the spooged Yamabond, (RTV), off the cover and head, and install a new valve cover gasket. About the same as my cost of the valve adjustment to begin with. Power was 50 miles down the valley from me and I was too busy that summer, so I ended up not going back with the old gasket and trying to get them to pay for the work, but they were in full CYA mode the two times I took it back before going to Beaverton, so I didn't expect more than BS and denial anyway.

Bend over Bob's did decent work. My only issue with them was that they pressure washed my bike, killing my HID relay in the process. I had to scramble to find and buy another HID pair of ballasts and relays that weekend since I didn't have time to fuss with it and couldn't risk losing the lights during my rally, which I was leaving for the next day. I rode 11k in 10 days and 12,500 in that next two week period, riding to the rally, doing the rally and riding home. No mechanical issues.

EricV,

Yep, the entire purchase process took 15 minutes including the service manager overview of the bike.

I would agree with you about service, but personally I'd say it's hit or miss with any of the dealers around here. My worst experience, which was very similar to yours with missing fasteners and cross threads, etc was at BMWOR, but I've had my share of issues with Beaverton and Motosport (Hillsboro) in the past too.

It's lead me to do my own service wherever possible. My next valve check is 20 something thousand miles away, and I feel I have the skills to check them. If they need shims though, I may be finding someone to help me out then...

Sorry about your experience.

I hear you. The only thing I let the dealer do is the valve adjustments. I can do it myself, but it's a real pita on the FJR, so it was worth it for me to pay to have it done. Action Motorsports in Fairview was the only good shop I ever found for the Yamaha. 5 star techs that knew their stuff. Sadly, they closed. I lived a mile from what used to be Action in Oregon City, (Factory Motorsports), but they were not the same owner and their service dept is great for tire changes, but not so much for more involved work. I don't know if Action in Gresham has the 5 star techs that were at the Fairview location.

I miss being close to GP Suspension too... :(
