Hi. I have a 2012 St and I want to upgrade my cct. Which one to choose and why?? I have found the manual cct is a lot cheaper than the oem hydraulic cct.
I have also a question regarding how to know what the correct tension is when adjusting the manual cct???
My bike has 50 000 kilometers already and I started hearing the chain flapping a little bit when cold. And even worse when I don't use it often.

Give me your best advice.

Thanks a lot

My stand on CCT is well known. I don't care for manual CCT for many reasons, now it appears that warranty may not be your concern, considering the year and mileage, but my concerns are still forefront in my mind.

If manual CCTs were of a better design and performance, why doesn't the O.E.M. (Yamaha) use it, with lower unit costs they could save large amounts of money and service problems? As a Mechanical Engineer, I learned many years ago there are other engineers that are smarter than me, therefore I trust the insight of the Yamaha engines to install the best design which will yield the highest return on invest and the lowest warranty recalls.

It's your money, do want you feel is best.

Good Luck

Manual CCT's used to be the norm on everything, but riders would put off maintenance too long and the chain, gears and tensioners would wear out too soon. Then the OEM's decided the automatic CCT would keep the chain tight all the time and make things simpler. The problem is that they have failed miserably to make a bullet proof tensioner which is why the S10 rattles on start up and gets worse as the miles add up. This is why the manual CCT is and has always been better when adjusted properly. All the OEM's have had their share of CCT problems.

But how do you know when is adjusted properly??? My concern is over tightening it and wear out the chain and gears.

I fully agree with this argument. ::026::

Yamaha's new 3 cylinder engines use a manual chain tensioner.

If the 'Engineers' are so good, why did they make a bad CCT that you have to replace with another design?

No manufacturer is perfect and a manual CCT is a known good substitute, as aftermarket or OEM, as the previous post says.

Your thread has been moved to the Power & Exhaust sub-forum. Do a search here and you'll find multiple threads about different CCT's and how to adjust them. The Youtube idea was great, as well.

The replacement and adjustment are both very easy to do.

Thanks you all.
I bought a graves cct from revzilla. Chose the graves one because of the grove that lets the oil run trough spilling the chain and going down to the cranckcase but still keeping the pressure.
To me that was the main reason for choosing the graves cct from the ape or the chinese ones on ebay.
