my (new) 2016 ES has a cable coming off the right side. it's a SAE connector. Vendor told me it's for using with a battery tender.

should I assume that this feed is not fused and therefore should not be used to supply power to anything, in other words, only use it for charging?

I put one on all of my bikes with fuses. Simply follow the wire back toward the battery or power panel and you will know quickly.

My bike also had one when I purchased it. It is not fused, so depending what you want to hook up you may or may not want to use this connection.

I will run my heated gear, with an inline fuse, using this connector, I have been using this method for years on all my bikes. I like the heated gear connected directly to the battery. All my other accessories I am using a fuse block.

You can wire it through a relay, but that would defeat the purpose of using it to charge your battery. You could also just put an inline fuse in it. You have several options, and none are difficult to do.

Most things that you might think to connect will already be fused.

Leave it there and just use it.

Questions for ALL: Do you add the fuse to the SAE cable or is there a cable that already has the fuse? What size fuse would you suggest?

I'd first look to see if a fuse is in place. If not you can add an inline fuse or purchase a new cable/connector with built in fuse. Fuse sizing takes into account two primary items....the wire size and item its powering. The idea is if there was a direct short to ground you want the fuze to blow long before the wire (becomes the fuse) and burns/possible fire. At the same time the unit/item being powered may require a specific fuse size to protect it. Always install the fuze as close as possible to the supply voltage source.

Here is an article that kind of discusses the topic...

I installed the one that came with my Battery Tender which had a fuse holder already incorporated in it. I put a 10A fuse in there which I think should be enough to drive my tire inflator.
