Hi everybody,

Just a simple question.

Can i put a 170/60/R17 rear tire instead 150/70/R17 in my Supertenere 1200?

Thanks in advance.

Measure from your sidewall to the rod for the rear caliper. The extra 20 (170-150) means the tire will take up 1 extra centimeter there.

Measuring on mine, it's just enough wider that you probably will be rubbing on the link for the brake caliper. If it does not rub, depending on the mold line of the model of tire, it will be very very close.

btw - Somebody on the Tacoma Truck forum made a nice tire size converter, which gives changes in speedo readings, overall gear ratios, etc. It is at:

Just a simple question....what the heck for?

Zero advantage and a plethora of disadvantages.

Wider tires usually will slow the turn-in so handling on the street won't be improved much. Wider tire also worse off road so no benefit there either. Basically no gain, as others stated.

Why would you want a rear tire that jacks with the excellent handling of this bike. Slower turn-in? Do you want to lean it further - I can drag pegs all day with the 150's - what part of the bike are you looking to touch-down, the fuel tank?

I'm just not getting the reason for this mod...

Since you're looking for a simple answer - you could I s'pose - but why the hell would you want to???

Perfectly good question to ask, in my opinion. I have several old tires in that size from my ST1300 that could be burned down just a bit more before hitting deep wear bars or cords - useful for local riding.

If they made a tractor tire sized to fit the tenere, I might consider trying it. Hell, I run a car tire on my ST1300 these days and I wish I could find an aggressive car tire to fit the tenere. Cheap tires with extreme longevity - going to the darkside. $110 tire with anticipated lifespan of 30K+ miles currently on the ST1300 beats a motorcycle tire priced at $180 with a lifespan of 5k-8k miles when I'm lucky.

I ride with lots of darksiders. It's a way of life.

Try going around sharp corners on one of those fat tired crusiers. Easy does it, thank you. Just wants to go straight.
Don't do it. Its a great handling bike the way it comes.

Yeah, wide tires look cool - I dare anyone to look at the 190 on this bike and tell me it doesn't look sweet:

Sure it does, but it's not necessary for great handling on the Tenere. I mean, if you're running near 200hp on a sub-400 pound hyper-bike capable of near dragging the handlebars, yeah, it makes sense.

I get where you're coming from, but just not needed in this particular application.

Surely, you are not saying that our Teneres are overweight, and underpowered lumps of metal with skinny tyres ::014:: ::014::

Compared to that thing, well...yeah.

And I need to correct myself - that's a 200 wide rear tire - maybe you actually could drag the clipons. ;)

I haven't read a good argument regarding car tyres on motorbikes for a while. Someone should comment and get this rolling. C'mon you know you want to.

So....I kept this thread question in mind for my next tire change. Like the bank robber said to Dirty Harry, "Man I gots to know."

YES, the 170/60 R17 will fit on the Super Tenere without any problems. Nothing rubs nor interferes with the fitment. I have quite a few of these old skins laying around from use/abuse on the ST1300. Some have enough mileage left on them to handle a long weekend or two.

If I go for a short ride this evening, I'll post any handling differences. I really doubt there will be any noticeable change.

It will be noticeable.
It's too big of a difference to not notice.

But that doesn't mean the difference is objectionable. Or one that you considerably dislike.

Go for it!

Tried it tonight. Almost NO noticeable difference. Slightly, and I mean tiny slight, more effort to drop into the turns but easier to exit as it will get upright easier. This is on a well used PR3 with a flat stripe down the middle - so sort of like a darksider tire, hence maybe the slight increase in effort and the want to stand upright.

Anyway, if this was the size available, I would run it without thinking twice. As long as stockers are available, they will be my first choice.
