Can't delete your own post

Problem: Members can't currently delete their own post. The Remove button does not appear by the "Quote" and "Modify" buttons in the upper right. Need to update it so Members (and not just Mods) have visibility to the "Remove" option on their own posts.

Can anyone else verify they have the same issue? If so, what browser and operating system (probably unrelated, but always good info to have).

The ability for a user to delete their own post is turned off.

My rationale:
1. Think before you post
2. If a user deletes their post and it was the first post in the topic, the whole thread gets wiped out
3. Users can edit/modify the content of their own posts
4. If a user really needs a post deleted, just contact a moderator or admin

I've seen on other forums where people start to wonder where stuff goes, and look to the admins for explanation. With this option off there is less mystery to deal with.

Agree totally!!! I'm an admin on the Honda Pilot forum and this is how we are setup as well.

We have to think before we post? That's a lot of pressure! Ha.

Those are sound reasons. Actually the only reason I asked and the only time I've run into it was when I went to modify my own post, to fix a typo or clarify a point, and accidentally clicked "Quote" instead. That made a new post that ultimately couldn't be deleted.

Well now there is a thread so people know why. :)

I did the same thing a few days ago, Chad and ended up with two posts of me saying the same thing. Next time I do that. I'll PM you about my screw up and you can delete it. :)

Ha. Sounds good.

When I did it, I just changed the text to a few decimal points. Looked weird but it ridded the thread of the duplicate content. Then I reported myself to the mods for an abusive post. My being able to delete them, now, will keep me from having to report me to myself. So I have that going for me...which is nice.

My laptop leff mouse button some times "double-click". It would be useful to delete that second post... It happens to me rarely, but it happens.

I was looking to delete a post because I put it in the for sale section by mistake. Is this still being considered?

Done, you should now be able to delete your own posts, but not your own topics. Confused? The difference is subtle - a topic is the first post in a thread. Those cannot be deleted, only subsequent posts in a topic by you.

Why am I doing it this way? Well, the issue is this - if somebody starts a topic, and it gets a bunch of replies, and then they go delete it, the ENTIRE topic disappears. I've seen this cause issues on other forums, because folks start wondering where their posts went.

So if you do accidentally start a topic in the wrong forum, you'll have to notify a moderator via the "Report topic" button and tell them to move it. If you happen to be replying to an already established topic, you can delete those individual posts.

Sounds like a good improvement and sound implementation.
