A few buddies and I are riding up to Alaska this summer from Idaho. We were looking at breaking off the Alcan and taking the Campbell HWY from Watson Lake over to Frenchman Lake. I've read that the only fuel on the Campbell HWY is found in Ross River. Can anyone confirm/deny this? I would hate to get out on this road and not have enough fuel with me to make it.

I hope you're planning your trip so that you can attend the Rally in Whitehorse, first week of July. There is now a card operated gas station in Faro. So, after Watson Lake, you should be able to get fuel at Ross River, Faro and then of course, Carmacks. Why Frenchman Lake as a destination, if you don't mind my asking ??? ? Good luck with your trip. R ::008::

Here is an email address for the Town of Faro. YOu can confirm that the gas availability is still OK. They are a friendly bunch and will get back to you. erica@faroyukon.ca R

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it!

We were just looking at the map and saw that you could camp in the Frenchman Lake area and that it had a road leading back to HWY 2. We might have to re-route it though if we need to get gas in Camacks before heading up to Dawson Creek. I know on the way back we'll be coming through Whitehorse, should be around June 29th when we roll through there. When does the rally start and end?

Do you have any recommendations for a good camping spot along the Campbell HWY? We'll be starting the day at the Liard Hot Springs. We plan on riding about 400 to 500 miles a day if possible.

You mean there is a better gas station in Ross River than this one? ::025:: Found this one first and was told it was open some times for some people. ???
Yes there is another station across town by the local store which had above ground fuel tanks when we were there in 2010.

Regarding camping spots, I'd have to look at the map but Simpson Lake and Francis Lake both have government campsites ... here you go http://www.environmentyukon.ca/maps/media/uploads/pdf-maps/Yukon_Government_Campgrounds.pdf

Regarding Dawson Creek ... you mean Dawson City, don't you? just checking.

Regarding getting gas in Carmacks, do it. When you emerge at the northern aspect of the Campbell Highway, Carmacks is maybe 2 miles to the south (left). Get your gas and then head back north. By the way, right at the intersection of Campbell Highway and Klondike Highway, there is the Coal Mine Campground. Eat there. It's good grub. RR

Lol... no clue why I said Dawson Creek! Yes Dawson City is where we'll be heading, then over to the Top of the World HWY into Chicken for the night.

Let me be clear ... you don't want to eat at the only other place in Carmacks ... the restaurant associated with the Carmacks Hotel. I think it's called the GoldPanner or something. Try to avoid that place if possible. You might take something away with you that you didn't arrive with ... like a disease. The store is very nice ... several gas pumps and a surprising assortment of miscellaneous doodads and junk that one might have a need for. Going north from there, you've got Pelly (small store), the Stewart Crossing (lots of gas and snacks), Moose Creek Lodge (decent food), Dempster Corner (gas - can be a strange place depending on who owns it now) then only about 24 more miles into Dawson. Lots of places there but can be VERY crowded in the summer. Have fun. R

We did eat at the Coal Mine and it was very good! But I was starved most of the time anyway.
