Battery Failure Rate ?

Had the battery fail in my wife's 2014 Honda and when I replaced it I found her Honda has the same battery as used in my 2014 S10.

We ride most of the same rides and her ride parks next to my S10 and in Florida I have never used a battery tender.

QUESTION: If you have replaced your S10 battery how many years did it last?

The battery seems weak in my 2012, but I have a load tester and it still tests good, so no replacement yet. 2008 Goldwing turns over good as new there, so no replacement there either. Many guys replace every 2 or 3 years just to be safe. Problem there is may get a bad new battery where the old one was still ok. I bought a Motorcraft battery for a 1993 E350 van and it lasted 12 miles.

The battery in my 2012 was just over 4 years when it died. As Ron wrote, we'd change batteries every couple of years in the bad old days, but the current AGM batteries should be good for 4-5 years. Possibly less in your hot environment.

I have NEVER had to replace a battery on any of the 8 bikes I've owned!

Although I never kept them for more than 3 years................. ::015::

My pre delivery 2012 is still going strong at 75K KM. It's five years old last month. It's on a battery tender, and I'll hook it up to a proper charger over the winter to check it's life expectancy.

Still, an amazing thing to contemplate. In my early days of riding (late 1960s) batteries were a consumable like fuel, oil, tires etc. On my old bikes I was lucky to get a year out of them and to do that you had to be fastidious about checking and adjust the water level and never use but the thrice distilled stuff. Seemed like so much as a drop of tap water was instant battery death. We've come a long way!

I've had to replace the battery in both my 2012 and my 2014ES. Both in under two years. Always kept on a battery tender when at home.

Leaving a tender on ALL the time is actually NOT good for the battery, especially in your NC summer heat. Quoting Battery University:

"As with all gelled and sealed units, AGM batteries are sensitive to overcharging. A charge to 2.40V/cell (and higher) is fine; however, the float charge should be reduced to between 2.25 and 2.30V/cell (summer temperatures may require lower voltages). Automotive charging systems for flooded lead acid often have a fixed float voltage setting of 14.40V (2.40V/cell); a direct replacement with a sealed unit could overcharge the battery on a long drive."

In the winter I use a tender on my bikes by putting it on for a day or two and then leaving it off for a couple or few weeks.

Hmmm... I'm in the foothills not the hot flatlands of NC and my Battery Tender jr is made for motorcycles. I'll check the output on the float/maintenance.

My 13 often sounds like it barely starts because the battery is weak, but other than the time it sat unused for 3 weeks it has always started. I have load tested it a couple times and it tests good. If I ever buy a new battery I will be looking for one with more cold cranking amps than the stock battery, it might help and it might not.
The original battery in my 02 wing worked fine for 206,000 miles, the only reason I replaced it was because it failed the load test.

My 2012 is 5 years old with 48K miles, still good with the original battery.

I've never heard any other Tenere besides mine when starting, do they all sound like the battery is weak or is it just mine ?

Normal.
Even with the internal compression release, the starter is working against two 600 cc pistons.

Our desert heat is good for shortening battery life. I got about 3 years out of the original, so I should have about another year left on the current one.

Mine often sounds lazy turning over. I think the starter is geared low to turn over that big twin.

After 2 years my stock battery felt weak and I really didn't want any of the starting issues that some of the folks on this forum have experienced so I chose to replace it with a Scorpion high output LifePo4 battery that was rated at 387 CCA vs. the stock 210 CCA.

Every start since that time feels like getting a jump start from a car battery! 2 years later and still very pleased!
