Good morning, I am looking for a good back brace for riding. Had back surgery on 5/24 and need to start looking now..The one the hospital gave me is a good brace, but more for torture in mid evil times. :)

So, any opinions would really help.
Thanks

Not sure exactly what your looking for, there's all kinds of braces out there. Here's a site to see the different kinds
http://www.braceshop.com/productcart/pc/THE-BACK-SHOP-c4.htm

I don't wear one while riding, but around the house I'll sometimes wear a flexible support brace while I'm doing stuff. It helps keep your posture and therefore minimizes pain at the end of the day.

Hope the surgery went well.

Thanks.. Maybe I should have been more clear. lol. I am looking for opinions on braces to be worn when riding. I know there are tons of braces, but I really don't want to toss out good money on something that does not work all that well. :) Kinda like buying a buying a bash plate, there are good ones and ones that are not so good..
Again thanks

Well, most riding belts are more to keep your internal organs in place, a kidney belt. A brace to structurally keep your recently repaired spine in place is a completely different animal. I would put out there that if the brace isn't squeezing and pinching you someplace uncomfortable, it probably isn't supporting your spine very well. Comfy while bouncing down the goat trail is one thing, keeping a spine straight comfortably, well, stay at home. :( I'd say that your surgeon might know spinal braces better than most. Or better yet, the physical therapist.

Sorry to hear of your dilema. Depending on the nature of the back surgery, is it ok with your surgen to ride this early in the healing process. If so the surgen could refer you to a Orthotist / Prosthetis for a custom fitting of a orthopedic device (can be expensive) so it can be covered by health insurance. This should be more comfotable and equilly effective if not more effective than a generic off the shelf appliance. I use to work in this field of medical technology some 25 years ago and I am sure the advances in material and application result in a much better appliance to day.

Salty S10 on order

The surgen would freak out if I told her I was getting ready to ride this quick. :))
I am only planning ahead for the day when she clears me for riding. At that time I will want to wear a support or brace just to take any strain off the back muscles.
I am not looking for an ortho brace, I already have one of those. I don't think I could get my jacket on with that. lol.

I have found a few that look like they will do the trick. Just need something that will be halfway cool to wear and give some support.
Thanks

My misunderstanding of when you intend to ride. But I still think a custom fitted back support would be more benificial, comfotable and used than off the shelf. The custom back support appliances I see today are not the bulky apparatus you use to see. This is a serious decision, you only have one back and you want to continue to ride.

I own an orthotic/prosthetic facility, there are many options. I would look into an elastic corset with semi rigid front and rear panels for motion control and support. They should be covered will a physicians prescription. Orthomold makes an lso and tlso with removable rigid panels that can be shaped/trimmed/removed during rehab and comes in various heights. Hope's lumbolux is good, but short for lower lumbar region. I would go talk with an orthotist, they will be up on the latest orthopedic braces more than the Physician or PT may be.

I've had good luck with "back-align".
Sorta on the weight belt side.
Velcro etc
It does have a curious disc, split for the spine. Interesting how it tightens down
Hard on the lower back...which has been my problem.
Anyhow..that's how I would direct you.

Thanks hANNAbONE and everyone else. The Back Align and a few others is what I'm looking at.

When I finish PT I should be good to go, however when I have been riding for a long time and my back starts to get tired, that's when I will want some support to relieve the tired muscles.

I hope to have this all done by the time my S10 arrives :)

I have some compromised back muscles due to a car accident over 20 years ago. I have found that a good motorcycle kidney belt helps keep my posture in line on long rides. I also wear it when riding my quad off-road (very intense riding style), and generally speaking I don't have any issues with back pain when I wear it.
