So I used my plate as a resting point while I had my front wheel off to change the tire. You guessed it. When I started it back up tonight I got nice oily smoke.

I'm an idiot. I thought a casting mark was a Crack. Smoke is burning off. Still can't figure out what it is, though.

Next step is to drain the oil, and remove the sump to see if it has any cracks, or hairline cracks on the inside.
Cracks may not be visible from the outside, but are from the inside.
You can also clean your oil screen while you are in there...

if it is cracked from this, what skid plate to you have on it? I've lifted mine with the ACD skid a few times with no issues.

I have the Motech plate. I don't think it's cracked. I'd been doing a bunch of work and I think some gunk got washed down onto the pipes and started to burn. It really looked like oil when I first took the plate off. I just couldn't figure out where it came from. Maybe it came out of the airbox drain? I'll do a little more investigation when it stops raining.

With the cat converter where it is, it's easy to have oil flow back onto it from the skid plate. Are your drain hoses dumping onto the skid plate, or past it?

I lift the front end of the bike with a car scissor jack under the sump cover, using a piece of wood in between the two. I never had any problems. The amount of force needed to lift the front wheel off the ground is very small. In fact I turn the scissor jack by hand without using the extension rod.

The two tank vents are long enough to go below. I'll have to look for the others. I still have a lot to learn about this bike. It's not like the Vmax that I had years of experience with.

Is there an oil overflow tube that connects to the airbox (there's one on the Vmax)?

The fingers are beneath the small stub of tube to catch airbox oil, which is not a drain. It's at the left rear corner, pretty much above where the aft-most corner of the left side fairing is. If extra oil is in the box and you don't drain the tube it looks like this:

I'm sure mines is full like that. I'll lift the tank again and drain it. Any places farther back? Like places that might dump onto the cat?

With the bike on the side stand it'd be easy to pop the thing off with a pair of straight circle liars.
