I wasn't happy with the stocker given the fact that I tend to overload top cases. I decided to try an ALTrider rack due to my high opinion of their quality and design excellence. An upcoming 2500 mile camping/touring trip provided the impetus to upgrade now, as opposed to later.

I'm very impressed with this rack. I've got a Givi E36 for a top case. I've used this model Givi case on other bikes and love it.

I've got 10 photos to post up, so I'll just briefly annotate them as I go...

Out of the box impression: Wow! This thing is exudes build quality.

It looks like it was machined in the flat and formed up perfectly. All of the shape cut edges that will see a bungee or strap are beveled on both sides. You can't do that with a punch or laser or plasma cutting operation. Nice touch!

Sub plate bracket install was quick and easy. The mating holes registered perfectly with the bike. The s.s. machine screws were medium strength, thread locked in, even though the installation instructions didn't call for it.

Top plate was installed using the stand off spacers, bolts, nuts, etc. Thread Locker was used. Fit up was excellent.

This is a pic of the stocker top plate sitting on top of the installed ALTrider rack.

Givi case mounting hardware installed. I "borrowed" this hardware from my DR 650's Givi E21 cased, Happy Trails racks. Revzilla didn't have the Givi kit in stock.

This rack is built like a brick s**t h***e! Outstanding build quality and fit up. Nice little extras like bungee "nubs", to prevent hook sliding, as well as strategically placed strapping slots, just add icing to the cake. This is one top notch, butt kicking rack.

Kudos to ALTrider. Well done!!

I like mine too. I've got a premier rack on my FJR with the givi thingamabobs for a Givi case (460). I've not moved it over to the XTZ yet but may for trips. I will also drill a couple of holes in the rack to mount a helmet lock to mount on the underside of the rack I think. Your set up looks nice. I keep some extra tools, owners manual and few other things (all in waterproof zip lock bags) in that shelf thing.

Yeah, that thing looks really nice. It's on my list ::025::

Has anyone tried fitting it in the low position yet? From what I was told by Altrider, it will not fit with the grab handles installed. My thought was to scrap the grab handles when I get my Jesse bags for a nice tight fit and then mount this rack in the low position.

I've been thinking about carrying one of those small, 12 volt tire pumps and a tire plug kit in there when I have the bags and top case off for trail riding or just "sporting", the bike. It looks like it has enough space to fit that stuff in there. Waterproof ziplock, freezer weight bags are the bomb, for sure!

Looks great! Still waiting for mine to show up, and am really looking forward to it.

BTW, for the under rack storage area, you may find a quick visit to Home Depot helpful - they have some great storage bags (Workforce, I think) that would be a good fit and are under $12.00. I use mine for tire repair kit and tools.

dear speedstar

i am expecting my raven 2012 super tenere here in new york city around october the 25th . my dealer is long island city yamaha . i will order your entire set of clear coverings plus the black exhaust shield mask when the bike arrives . meanwhile - if it is not too much trouble - could you kindly take two or three full profile shots of your raven super tenere ( showing full length left and right profiles ) ? please shoot the photos in good outdoor light and without any bags or luggage mounted on the bike . your photos from this thread are certainly well done and show the products that you sell quite vividly . you must have a decent camera . not only do i want to view a full profile of both sides of your bike ( without luggage mounted ) in order to see what your plastic covers look like , but also - for some reason - there are not any really good shots of a raven super tenere on this forum or any other forum . all the decent photos of new super teneres are blue colored bikes . yamaha has some great studio shots of the raven super tenere on the official yamaha site but all of their live outdoor photos are of blue super teneres only . i hope i am not asking too much of you but three or four well done full profile shots of your raven super tenere would be a great addition to this forum . i plan to post my own photos in about six or eight weeks . thanks .

i haven't tried it. went to the garage to get the installation instructions because i remember seeing something about mounting in the low position. the instructions are nowhere to be found. however, just looking at the rack... it's clear that if the rack was mounted in the low position, the grab rails would have to be removed.

When you say "low position" - does it get there by reducing the space in the cubby hole?

Yes, Actually by removing the lower piece that makes the cubby hole all together. I am pretty sure that you only install the actual top plate directly to the holes in the tail section. This would make the rack almost flush with the backend with the rear seat removed. Makes one nice big platform for lashing gear. Most likely this will be my set up 99% of the time as I am mostly solo riding these days.

Due to the amount of wattage draw a tire pump can use (not to use the front 12 volt), I wired one up to my fuze block with a 10 or 15 W fuse (can't recall which now) and put it under the seat so if I need it for the pump or whatever, I can just pull the seat off (rear seat). But that shelf can be used for that and many other things too.

I got mine yesterday and will be installing it today. It is a nice made piece for sure. Beats the OEM in every way. Glad I waited on it.

This is by far the best mod and money I have spent on this bike so far. Way better than stock. Extremely nice build quality!

Tend to agree - easy install, great quality and expanded capability. I have installed 5 or 6 of the AltRider guards and what-not and this is the best of the lot. Money well spent!
