So I'm about to make the dive into Yamaha territory after many years on the Suzuki side of the fence. I am headed to Prescott AZ later in the week and hopefully riding a 2014 Tenere ES home.

I've never ridden a big adventure bike, but research on this forum and ADVRider have lead me to believe that the Tenere is the way to go. Reliable, priced well, and pretty darn capable. I'm planning on the ES because of the adjustable suspension. As a big guy (6'5" ~385lbs) who hasn't adventured before, it seems a good idea to have more adjustability to learn what I want/need, and then possibly upgrade to a different suspension package as needed.

I'd love any feedback on mods to the bike that are "necessary" from the showroom floor. I've read about the Clutch Switch Mod, which seems to be less of an issue with the Gen2 map? Also, the steering head bearings seem to be worth a big look, a bucket of lube, and a torque wrench.

A bit of history, I've been riding since I was a pup, and have 17 years of road experience under my belt. Here's what I can remember:
  • XR600 - Daily rider in high school.
  • Honda Sabre 750 - Daily commuter for a couple years after high school.
  • 2004 GSX-R 600 - "Must go faster.... OW MY KNEES!"
  • 1999 Hayabusa (bone stock). Inherited when my dad's neck got so bad he couldn't handle the position. It was always "My Dad's Bike", and I didn't ride it enough, and eventually had to let it go to someone who would.
  • 2006 DRZ-400-SM. I imagine this is what riding a Grom feels like. Easily my favorite around-town bike, and great for some light off-roading (forest roads, and minor single track).
  • (Hopefully) 2014 Super Tenere ES. I'd like to do more long-distance travel. When I can't take the kiddos, why not ride? Have a good time on the way and at the destination. Plus, I might actually get the lady-friend on the back of this one.
  • 2012+ KTM EXC 500. This is my reward if I can get my fat butt down to 285lbs. 'nuff said.

That's it, hopefully I'll be seeing you guys as I learn about the Tenere and post ride reports.

Welcome and congrats on the bike. With the new 14 ES you might not need a reflash of the ECU. I would just ride the thing and see what you think. As far as mods there are plenty. I would suggest a set of crash bars to help protect the bike in a drop and a skid plate if you plan to go off road at all. Unless things have changed, the Yamaha skid plate is good only for light duty since it attaches to the sump. There are many options for both with each have advantages and disadvantages. Lots of reviews on here so you can read up and decide what works best for your riding and budget. Be sure to post up some pics and your impressions of the new bike.

Another good point is the leg room on an S10. Most of any big Adventure Bike. The awesomeness is in the actual ownership of this bike. Not sure about the Reflash. The 2014 is better than the 12-13 in snappyness department especially in S Mode.

Look into getting a stronger rear spring. I'm only 6'-2" & 230#, but replacing the stock spring made a world of difference especially with s cargo load of any type. Only thing to check is if the ES pre-load mechanism is okay with it. Dealer can help you check the static sag for reference before you drive off.

Ur making a great choice. Enjoy.

Welcome aboard! The ST is a perfect bike for Arizona backcountry roads, but I definitely recommend engine guards and a good skid plate. These will cover two vulnerable areas on the bike, the radiator fan and the sump. If you feel like joining some other AZ riders, there is a group ride going up to Crown King from the Bumblebee side on 9/14. I usually have the only ST in the group, so it would be nice to see another one!

After two broken right side covers, i wouldn't agree.

@TO

Minor update. Blue pill taken. So far so good. Loving every minute of it. Sport mode is down-right intoxicating. Got out the door for $15.8k, and had a nice ride home.

I did give it an oil change after ~175 miles. I'm paranoid and figure $30 for oil and a filter isn't bad to clear the crud out. Oil looked good coming out, but as I emptied the oil collection pan, there was some silver flakies at the bottom. Glad I did it, and I'll do it again at $600. Oil change experience was great, too. No dripping on the pipes, the garage floor, etc. Clean and smooth.
