6 Months? Really?

My Super-T's owner's manual states engine oil change requirements based on both mileage (4 kmi) & time (every 6 months). I own several bikes so I have only averaged about 2500 miles/year on my Super-T. In my part of the country, where mileage goes down in winter months, the 6 month requirement seems excessively conservative. I normally like to change oil/filter at end of fall riding season, & would likely put less than 1000 miles on it before Spring, and another change then seems wasteful & unnecessary. I do all of my own maintenance, & would not normally buy extended warranty but I got a deal I could not refuse on YES warranty extension for 4 additional years (5 total). So I am wondering: Has anyone ever had a warranty repair turned down because of failure to meet the every 6 month requirement? I asked a dealer service manager, & he said no. He said its there only to protect against folks who are extremely negligent, and end up with sludge.

Every 12 months would be fine... Mine is laid up over most of winter, and I did 4000 miles on it last year..... best to change the oil before it goes to sleep , ride it all summer, change the oil and put it to bed again ... not heard of any road bikes where the requirement is every 6 months ::017::

I agree with Bryn, drain the oil at the end of the season. Think about this, many dealers have carry over stock, do you think they change the oil based on time?

When I bought my 2013 ST it had less than 60 miles on the ODO. First thing I did after getting home was to change all fluids. No acids no moisture hopefully no problems from that stand point.

Good Luck
