No reason to change to 5.1 unless you're a racer and have a problem with the boiling point of dot 4 and 5.1 will absorb more moisture and need to be changed more often. Most riders never have a fluid boiling problem and could get along just fine with dot 3. JMO

So I did a quick search and read. I liked this article best. In short... Looks like you are raising the boiling point of the oil the higher the DOT number and you can mix DOT 3,4,5.1 as they are based on the same chemicals. Where the DOT 5 is silicone based and cannot be mixed with any other type of DOT fluid. So if 5.1 costs more and you aren't racing or hitting very sinuous roads with heavy brake usage a lot then 5.1 is overkill. Especially if you don't change out your fluid every 2-3 years as it gets contaminated.

I'd swap it every two years as recommended. If after 2 yrs it is really dirty then go to 1 yr. I know 4 yrs is to long... I will dig up a pic of my CBR after 4 yrs. Had sludge in the reservoir!
