You are correct. They are aluminum skin. I've just never had an experience where they were "untouchable" or anywhere near so.

Where are you exactly? Also, are you referring to the Yamaha OEM side case and top box when you speak of black boxes? I wonder whether you know what material they are constructed of? If so, have you actually touched one of them? I ask because I've ridden with these in 101° heat and I did not...
