As someone else said, he is a respected journalist and probably got more miles and experience that you, me and the rest of the contributors to this thread combined. And stuff like this can happen to anyone - we've all made bonehead moves before and it really is pure chance whether you end up with a bike lying on its side with a broken mirror or at bottom of the harbor.

This sport is dangerous.

I don't often have the paniers on, so when I do, I have to watch out.
I've already taken a mirror off a friend's R1200RT, and a tail light off another friend's KLX250!

That bike has 'merely a flesh wound'...... The new FJR is so awesome it can stand up to this type of riding.. Just dust it off, its a Yamaha ! :D
